    What's Cooking?

    I heard that too.
  2. Books and Youtube are great, but you'll find so much material that it's overwhelming. And, not all of it's good. Not a bad start, especially during the winter months... But, the very best bang for your buck (time and money) is to get with someone who knows the ropes. I don't mean just any old body either. Get someone who's seasoned and has the skill set and temperament to teach. They're not standing on the street corners holding up signs and begging people to come up and ask questions -- you've got to go find them. I'd hit one of the clubs mentioned. Don't be bashful -- all these clubs are going to be open to guests. Sure, there will be the cliques and maybe even snobs. Or hit a local fly shop. Just sniff around until you find the right guys. Be willing to pop for lunch, dinner, whatever and give a little in return for what you'll take. 'Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.' Ben Franklin

    What's Cooking?

Anybody remember 'The Galloping Gourmet'? First cooking show I remember watching. He always cooked with clarified butter.
  4. Big fan of simple right here. I like those -- keep 'em coming!

    What's Cooking?

I knew all that, just didn't want to come across as a know-it-all blowhard so I kept it to my self ? Seriously, thanks for the contribution.
  6. ^that, but never upgraded to the cam. Pedestal version. Only other vises I've used were an old Thompson c-clamp and a Regal which was pretty good.

    What's Cooking?

It's clean-out-the-freezer week at stately ness manor. Tonight a couple Swai filets in a lemon caper sauce, along with some frozen okra. Blah.
  8. http://www.nikon.com/news/2016/0106_camera_05.htm Still kinda trying to get my head around this. It's obviously a challenger to the GoPro cameras. But I'm not sure how you're going to view the output from this thing.Best I can figure is it's gonna be kinda like Street View on Google, where you can scroll up/down/left/right and change the view -- except with video. Does this mean you can pretend to record your kid's Christmas program but actually scroll around the gym checking out the hot moms in the audience? I can see that being useful. Sounds pretty groundbreaking to me, but I'm not too up-to-date on this stuff. Not a lot of information available at this time.
  9. Please PM me your personal information, stat. I'd like to take out a life insurance policy on you.
  10. My last cat, and I mean last both ways, peed all over the house. I only have a couple locations where I do that. So, I respectfully disagree on the mirror thing
  11. Alright, I guess I'll be the one to say it: Incredibly stupid Smalliebigs -- on a multiple different levels. Sorry. Aren't you a husband and father of a couple young kids? Flood waters...winter...no vest. Anyone of those alone is a risk. The time to figure out something is incredibly stupid to do is before you start. You were about 10 seconds away from being a Darwin Award recipient. Happy for your wife and kids they've still got you. Aw, shucks. I guess I'm happy we've still got you here at OAF too
  12. And lots of kind-hearted souls to take them into their homes too. Life-to-date I've rescued one feral kitten (lived 19 years) and two cast-offs from my ex-wife's family members (one 10+ years, the other 2 years +/-). I have fulfilled my obligation to the domesticated animals and irresponsible pet owners out there. Now I buy what I want when I want it. Like this pure-bred bird dog:

    What's Cooking?

Hmm. Did not know that. Welp, tonight, and for a few nights to come, it will be ho-made chicken noodle soup made it from an actual chicken. I cut out the back and used it and the wings (with celery, onion, carrot, bay leaves and peppercorns) to make a stock. Then used that strained stock to cook the breasts, thighs, carrots, peas and herbs. I like to do it this way because I think the chicken is more tender and juicy with a shorter cook time. Cooked noodles separately in heavily-salted water and added them at the end. When you put this stuff in your mouth it tastes pretty good.
  14. Thank you. I love my Brittanys but I think I may get a lab when my older dog goes. These days ness' legs don't want to do all the walking upland bird hunting requires. What do you want this lab to do? Retrieve ducks, point & retrieve, chew up shoes, all of the above?
  15. Good post, Mitch. Assuming it's, accurate that is Can you save me a Google and talk a little about the difference between field trial and hunt test? I kinda know what field trials are, for Brittanys at least.
  16. I'd add -- If you've got kids and/or a wife leave them at home.

    What's Cooking?

Yeah, it's just melted butter with the water and milk solids removed by heating and skimming. Different flavor, cleaner and less fatty. Can also be used for cooking. Has a higher smoke point than butter.

New Year's Brunch: Biscuits and gravy with Mimosas.
  21. Kudos to you, Seth. To me, this is how charity should work. Right down at the local, get to know you, eye-to-eye, person-to-person level. As long as we pay into a huge pot and have somebody far away decide how to spend it, we'll always have waste, inefficiency and graft. We'll continue to train people to be takers, dependent on others. And that's all I've got to say about that.

    2016 Garden Thread

This is the crock I bought. Not as expensive as the German ones I had seen. I did a quick read on horseradish -- you plant it in the spring and dig the root. Can get pretty invasive if you don't get it all though. Maybe best a container? Yes, I'd take some off your hands.

    2016 Garden Thread

Yeah, I get Territorial seed catalog. What's the variety of grilling pepper you grow. Marconi?
  24. ...wanted to beat BilletHead to the garden thread this year. I guess technically the 2016 garden started in October when I planted garlic. The catalogs are rolling in, and I start thinking about the garden this time of year. I'll inventory my seeds and see what I need to pitch. I'll review my notes from previous years and start to plan my garden for this year. Then get the new seed ordered and begin starting things in the basement in January. I've been gardening in the same location in the current yard since 2002. During those 13 years the trees have grown to where I'm getting shaded more than I want. By mid-June the northernmost beds are in shade by late afternoon now. I've also got tall trees to the south and west, so the sweet spot in my yard is small and shrinking. Gonna have to decide what I want to do and get on it!

    What's Cooking?

Great sounding meal, RPS. And, take and bake bread is a wonderful thing. I hope you're staying high and dry down there!
