What "old time" lure do you still routinely throw and why?
MOsmallies replied to msamatt's topic in Smallmouth Talk
Just curious... But what's the biggest smallie you have caught on the Rebel Craw and what is the average size? -
From what I can tell from a quick google search it's 15" statewide unless marked otherwise. I looked at the Special Management Regs for LOZ and did not see Walleye mentioned.... So I believe it's 15"... If that's the case, we have never caught a short on LOZ

DADAKOTA - Funny you mentioned this... I'm also in the Midlake area and my father in law and I have caught 7 over the past two weekends. All between 15-19". All 7 have been caught on roadrunners while crappie fishing (So less than 8 feet deep). 3 from one spot, 3 from another, and 1 from a third spot. I caught a 19" while cranking a mainlake point for bass last July. And a 17" & 20" while fishing a jerkbait on a secondary point on Thanksgiving 2013. Before that I had never seen one caught in person on LOZ... They definitely seem to becoming more prevalent!! WHARFRAT who used to post quite often targets them I believe and has caught some monsters the last couple years. Hope he's alright as I don't think I've seen him post in a while. Question for everyone... We have released all of the walleye we have caught this spring as we just weren't sure on the length and possession limits on LOZ for walleye. Is it 15" or 18"?

I'm a huge megabass fan as well... They are definitely worth it especially in the cold water months! Also check out the Jackall Squad Minnows

The Rapala X-Rap is a great warmer water jerkbait. The XR08 is a good all around size... The XR10 may weed out some smaller fish.

Reports from the weekend? Coming down 23rd
MOsmallies replied to brianetz1's topic in Lake of the Ozarks
If I was coming back down this weekend to bass fish, I'd be throwing a carolina rigged brush hog on secondary points and rock transition banks near spawning pockets... and pitching senkos, tubes, or beavers behind docks... Would probably have a buzzbait tied on as well. -
Was down this weekend for a small, friendly crappie tournament... 5-8 pm seems to be the magic hours. We caught em all day but had to work for em in the morning. 11 am - 3 am were decent as well... 1/16 oz red roadrunner with a blue ice baby shad did the most damage. We had 5 walleye and a 16" white on that combo as well. Most were in that 5-6 foot range, some on the bank, some still staging a little deeper. Never did find any big fish though. 9 lbs 2 oz (14 crappie) won our little tournament. I had 7 lbs 7 oz.... We only do a 14 fish limit. Good luck!

Thanks peoriaone... Unfortunately they really aren't for sale yet. Mitch is a forum member and a really good dude but he hasn't quite started manufacturing his craws in bulk yet. -

New Personal Record - Bass and Crappie Report (4/10 & 4/11)
MOsmallies replied to MOsmallies's topic in Lake of the Ozarks
It's a custom paint job from Dwain Batey with Baitwerks... Called Olive Orange Craw -
After my weekend at the lake and reading all of these reports, I'd say things are really about to bust loose on Lake of the Ozarks. 5-7 lb bass are being caught like crazy it seems like. Some big fish will be weighed in next weekend at the BBB for sure. Got down to the lake (Mid Lake Area) late on Thursday night. Got the boat all prepped and rods rigged up before crashing for the night. Headed out first thing Friday morning. Ran about a mile up lake to a large cove that Smalliebigs and I got into a Wart bite last Spring. Went about 2/3 of the way back in this cove and there was already a BFL boat prefishing the bank I wanted to hit. Saw them chucking A-Rigs so I let them do their thing and I motored to the opposite side while I waited them out. Water temps at 54 so I threw the Wart and Jerkbait intermittently. Nada, so I played around with the Ned Rig and caught a fat 13" Kentucky on my 3rd cast with it. Way to slow of fishing for me especially when I know they should be hitting moving baits. Finally the BFL boat finished their pass, so I motored over to the very beginning of the stretch I wanted to hit. A long chunk rock bank leading into a spawning pocket... 2-10 feet of water... There are three docks at the beginning of this stretch and then no docks for the next 200 yds. Caught a dink in between the first two docks on the Wart and then it happened... I trolled to the far end of the 3rd dock and made a cast with the Wart to the bank before I moved in to parallel the dockless stretch. Immediately felt a fish swipe at it but miss. Cast right back to the same spot, turned the handle twice and my rod just loaded up. The fish felt heavy immediately and I just began praying it wouldn't be a drum. At that moment the fish surfaced and I saw it was a nice bass. The biggest one I had ever hooked. Three jumps and a brief tangle in the motor later, I lipped a beautiful, fat, pre-spawn female. My biggest bass to date. Only 20.5" but 6.39 lbs. Snapped a few pics and then watched her swim away. I'll never forget this fish... Only caught shorts the rest of the weekend... Wiggle Wart, Jerkbait, Mitch Field's Craw. Lost a 3 lber at the boat on a spinnerbait. Water temps mostly 54-57 but I did see 60 way back in a pocket on Friday afternoon. If you put Mitch's craw in front of a fish, they can't help but nail it... And they don't let it go... Once my father-in-law got down Friday afternoon, we mostly crappie fished the rest of the weekend as he has a tournament coming up this weekend. Probably caught 50 crappie in about 5 hrs of fishing for them this weekend. At least 40 were keepers. None bigger than 12 inches but lot of solid 10.5" to 11.5" fish though. Very few were on the banks yet. Most were in 6 to 12 feet of water and suspended 3-5 feet down. Caught them equally as well on minnows and jigs. 6-8 pm seemed to be the most consistent bite especially on Saturday night. Eggs were getting to be pretty bloody so they should be heading to the banks real soon... Might be back down this weekend to fish my father-in-laws Crappie Tournament or the BBB... Not sure yet. Hope to see the reports and pics keep coming.

Midlake area near Tan-Tar-A... Caught another 14 lber this past weekend
-
This thread seems to be getting hijacked by a discussion on Catfish, so I thought I'd share that there are still some nice Blues swimming around out there. My father in law and a buddy of his had a 12 lber, 18 lber, and a 29 lber off of our dock last weekend. Tightlining cutbait... And our dock is near the very back of our cove... These fish were in about 15 foot of water...

fishinwrench!!!! You da man! Those are some nice whites and a great pic! Thanks for sharing!

Welcome rblackburn.... I'm heading down for the first time this spring to our place in the Mid-Lake area. My father-in-law has been on the crappie so hopefully they will still be on this upcoming weekend. They have a handful of spots all less than 15 feet deep that hold pre-spawn crappie year after year. One of the most consistent spots is a dock that sits on a secondary point pretty far back in a cove. Front of the dock is probably 15-18 feet deep and the back of the dock is around 8-10 feet deep. Good spawning pockets on both sides of the secondary point. You can catch em on jigs I'm sure but the action with minnows under slip bobbers is just fast and furious. I mostly bass fish, so if I can't figure them out I'll head for all of the likely crappie spots this weekend.

Nicely done Justin... Way to adjust!

Tournament Bass Fishing and Me: A report about this weekend.
MOsmallies replied to BrockLee's topic in Short Stories
We all have those days... I actually have way more of these types of days than the really good days... Just keep at it and know the fishing gods will even the score some day soon. Great read! -
Stud bronzeback! You put a bait like Mitch's Craw into the hands of a very skilled angler like Aaron and these are the results... Congrats Aaron and Mitch

Great report! Glad you guys got into a few in less than ideal conditions
