Fishing for Walleye next week from Pontiac area.
Walleyedmike replied to Jim-to-fish's topic in Upper Bull Shoals
I've never fished Bull, so no help here. But post some pics of that new Skeeter for us all to enjoy Jim! WM -
Look like legal keepers to me. Nice bag and awesome big bass Dollar Bill. Kind of funny, I was so fixed on that big bass pic, I didn't even notice the dog in the background! Good looking dog and a priceless pic of a day you'll remember forever. Keep after 'em! WM

Dang lmt out, your picking right back up where you left off last fall! Bottom bouncing? 1.2 mph or so? Inquiring minds want to know! WM

Walleyedmike replied to hoglaw's topic in General Angling Discussion
I think this may be your hilbilly answer! Still available at nearly any antique store. WM -
Yea, I like to keep a few bass filets in the freezer for when company comes over for some fried fish. LOL WM

Nice bag there Dollar Bill. Sounds like a really great day! WM

Nice job lmt out. Hope you stay on 'em so I can start following you around when I get down there! LOL WM

Agree with zarra and slab. That chartreuse one and purple tiger are usually two of the first flicker shad colors I start with. WM

Go west on Y Highway across the bridge to the town of Arcola. Turn north on Hwy 39 which goes to Stockton in like eight miles or so. Don't forget to post a report! WM

Don't ya hate it when work gets in the way of fishing? WM

A 33" pickerel would be pretty rare. According to the MDC website, the Missouri state record pole and line pickerel was caught in 1974 and weighed 5lbs 1 oz. A 33" pickerel would smash that record. My guess is the fish was a musky that made its way into Stockton from Fellows Lake. Maybe a few fertilized eggs or fry could make it? I'm not familiar with what obstacles are between the lakes. WM

Walleye University with Johnnie Candle
Walleyedmike replied to Gary Stanton's topic in Fishing Events
I signed up for this today, hope to meet some of you guys from the OA forum at the seminar! WM -
So a couple of weeks ago I mentioned making some buck board bacon out of a couple of pork butts. Last weekend I pulled it out of the cure and cold smoked it for fifteen hours. Let it rest in the fridge until tonight and sliced it up. Had steak, grilled asparagus and butternut squash for supper so was too full to sample the bacon! Ended up with sixteen pounds. Can't wait for tomatoes to come on!

Lol! You've got me figured out Dan. I am a walleye hunter, and hope to someday be a consistent walleye catcher! Can't wait for spring to get here so I can open the camper and get at it! Hope to meet up with you on the lake some day so we can compare notes. WM

Walleye University with Johnnie Candle
Walleyedmike replied to Gary Stanton's topic in Fishing Events
I've been to Johnnie Candle's Walleye U three times at Scheel's stores in Lincoln and Omaha. It's definitely worth the fifty bucks, and would highly recommend it to guys in the KC area that are interested in putting some 'eyes in the boat. I'm hoping to make the run down to Overland Park for this session as well. WM -
I troll with Flicker Shads a lot. The purple Tiger and Chartreuse are usually the colors I start with. As far as lure retrievers, I have one that slides down the fishing line with the chains hanging on it. I upgraded the chord as many have. I was talking to a guy at the ramp one day and saw that he strung his retriever chord around a marker buoy so it could be retrieved if he dropped it. Looked like a good idea to me so I did the same thing. It's amazing what you can learn by chatting with other fishermen at the dock! WM

That couples cooking class looks like a blast! The wife and I went to a class on cooking with dutch ovens on coals last summer and had a great time at that one too. Been lurking on this thread for a while and thought it was time to check in. Spent most of the afternoon cooking today. I picked up a small brisket at Sam's in KC while on our way to Stockton a couple of months ago. Threw it in the smoker this morning and it turned out fantastic. Had baked beans and fried cabbage on the side. My wife had picked up around twenty pounds of bone in chicken breasts for .99/LB so we decided to de-bone them and pressure can them today. A lot of quick and easy chicken and noodles and chicken and dumplings are in my future! Also removed the bone from a couple of pork butts, sliced them in half and put them in a dry cure. They will be cold smoked in a couple of weeks for buck board bacon. That's going to make some tasty breakfast eatin' at the camper at Stockton this spring and summer! WM

MOPan, I've always used the old school internet explorer but had to switch to google chrome to be able to post on the site after the upgrades. You might try that. Also appreciate having a COE guy posting on the site. WM

Trolling with gas outboard vs trolling motor . . . ???
Walleyedmike replied to wareaglecamo's topic in Stockton Lake
Good advice from LoweSTX175. That Honda isn't going to bother the fish at all. When bottom bouncing, kinda the rule of thumb is 1 oz of weight per 10 feet of water. So if your going to bounce in 30', 3oz bouncers would be recommended. I rarely bottom bounce any deeper that 25'. In the spring you'll find walleye in 10-15 feet of water. Actually, I start at those depths all spring and summer and then move out until I find the fish. Knowing what speed your running and being able to duplicate speed and depth is important when trolling. I also don't necessarily have my bouncers dragging on the bottom, I let line out until I feel the wire on the bouncer hit bottom and then reel up a turn. Then in a few seconds I drop the rod tip and check that I have contact with the bottom and adjust accordingly. Try crawler harnesses with different blade colors and slow death rigs to dial in what the fish want. I use a combination of bait casters with a flippin' switch and cheapo Cabelas line counters when bouncing. I generally use lead core for trolling crank baits usually after the 1st of July, however trolling cranks on lead in the spring can be killer for walleye and crappie. I'd recommend trolling bouncers first and become proficient with that and then move on to crankbaits. Don't be afraid to bounce a little faster than 1 mph, lmtout out was bouncing somewhat faster this summer and was hammering the walleye. Also if you hook up, turn around and troll right back through that spot until you stop getting bit. Good luck, I'm thinking you'll find success trolling. WM -
Incredible pics BilletHead! I showed my wife and she couldn't believe that was Caplinger. I'll bet it was nerve racking walking on that old bridge during water that high. You all be careful down there that high water is dangerous. The storm is gonna be in my neck of the woods early this morning in the form of a blizzard. I'm not looking forward to that! WM

Great job guys! WM

Made a quick trip to Stockton this weekend. Spent around nine hours fishing and put nine walleye in the boat with two keepers. All were released. Spent time 50/50 bouncing spinners/slow death and trolling cranks on lead. Each presentation was pretty much equal. Fish caught on points in 17-20' of water. Watched for lmt out's boat so I could folllow him around, but never saw him! LOL! Couldn't have asked for better weather, wish I could have stayed a few days longer. WM
