When I lived in St Louis (until 99) This game was the hardest ticket to get I had an easier time getting world series and final four tickets than braggin rights tickets. I guess it was as much fun to be there as it used to be

exiledguide replied to troutgnat's topic in Table Rock Lake

I'd like to say I wasn't fooled .......but my nose is pretty big already and I don't want my pants to catch on fire.......

How about Harbor Point and Portage Des Sioux? Fishing the pipe that ran under the road between Portage and the Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine and giving that old red headed lady who owned the house on the downsteam side a Pint of Old Crow so we could park and fish out of her back yard.

Back then a trip to Brickhouse slew at west alton was a big trip with a one dollar rowboat rental and who could afford steak..............I also remember asking Lowel Pierce, when he visited his parents one year at Christmas when he brought up a cooler full of duck breast what he had done with all the big bass he and Virgil caught on the show when he fished with Virgil he told me he traded them for steaks because who coud afford steaks and believe me bringing home fish makes the bride a lot happier and you meet a lot better group of people fishing than you do on the gulf course.

Lake May Be Drained To Raise Mississippi Levels
exiledguide replied to Riverwhy's topic in Mark Twain Lake
I retired in 97 Wayne but the last time I talked to anyone about it things don't change much. As far as jumping on a sleeper, I always had a fantasy of riding in a sleeper car from NY to LA with Jayne Mansfield.......and Kim Novack........and Elizabeth Taylor and if you never road on a Army Troop train in the early 60s taking a day and a half from Camp McCoy Wisconsin to Union Station in St Louis you have don't know what fun is....... -
Lake May Be Drained To Raise Mississippi Levels
exiledguide replied to Riverwhy's topic in Mark Twain Lake
The origonal subject was about draining Mark Twain I think the answer lies in the great lakes a number of years ago during drought times the proposal was to drain water from the great lakes through Lake Michigan but it was shot down by the not only Illinois but all the other great lakes states claiming it would hurt commerce on the lakes and rivers...........I don't know if that is being consiered today but it would seem you could drop the great lakes and get a lot of water in the Miss system I know when they had flooding in Chicago in the past they released more than the agreed upon amount........... -

Wayne you have got to be joking. One of the last bid runs I had was a Poseyville Indiana turn to meet Lexington Ky and take those loads to Dupo IL railyard to go on the train for Mesquite Tex (that was the Dallas Hub and pick up two Mesquite loads for Earth City MO. I was scheduled an 8and 1/2 hour day The train was scheduled in an hour before I arrived and Monday was the only day of the week the train was there and by Friday I usualy had used up so many available hours that I had to work in in the city to keep from going over the 60 hour weekly limit. But the good side was I figured I made 15 hours a week overtime at time and a half siting on my butt waiting for a train, about an extra $20,000 for the year. And that was just one train. Next time we will talk about how you couldn't put a trailer on a train in Spokane Washington and get it past Kansa City, Mo on the rails.... -
I prefer below the Shevin Rock access, I wade the James and that would be my prefered stretch down through the big long hole that has the rope swing on the right and most all of the better fish came from the right bank as you move downstream. I usualy wade downstream and fish my way back up. Other guys here could recommend outfitters I know there are some in Galena and at Hootentown below the access there and I have never heard anyone complain about there service.

I have to admit back then the atraction of fishing was a fun way to get fresh fish and I was too poor to release a meal back into the water I couldn't justify spending the money to go fishing if I didn't bring some home. Nowadays if i bring anything home its on the low end of a slot limit.

I fish for my pleasure and the only pictures I take or of the places I am fishing or friends I am fishing with. I also wonder why someone will stop fishing get out a camera delay the immediate release of a fish so they can take a picture. It just doesn't seem all that important to me.

I have never fished it but I worked with guys who did and fishing in early spring usually was fantastic as long as they got steady weather if they got crappy cold windy weather they didn't do that well.

I think one thing that has to be remembered in the 70s if a big fish was caught it was kept. I remember seing Virgil Ward, Linder brothers at the end of there TV shows they brig in big stringers of Bass and dump them on the ground as the final scene of the show. No one ever even mentioned Catch and Release. Today you catch a large fish most of release it Immediatly and no one hears about it.

I agree with stlfisher, my zone is when everything is posative when I'm on the water and lake fishing becomes as predictable as river fishing for smallmouth. I've had periods where no matter where I'm fishing every target I cast too the lure lands exactly where I intend it to and more often than not catch a fish. It didn't seem to matter if it's a farm pond , a lake like Table Rock or a Canadian shield lake I've conversly had periods when it seemed I couldn't catch a fish in a barrel. I had a discussion with Clun a long time ago when I had started to experience being in the zone and hadn't talked to anyone about it because I found it hard to believe myself that you could have these priods when you would get in the zone.It also happened when I fished a lot of days in a short time. I think maybe you accumulate a lot of knowledge over the years of fishing and if you don't overthink the situation and go with your gut feeling you can do quite well. But I also would like to figure out what causes someone to get out of the zone.

Get out of here!!! LOL Congratulations.

Before you buy on the internet you might try local fly shops around your area. When I bought mine I couldn't find it localy. -
Chest Pack - Sage
exiledguide replied to podum's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I looked around a while back and bought the Fishpond Waterdance Guide Pack the big selling point for me was that you can also use it as a sling pack or fanny pack as well as a chest pack and it has 2 mesh pockets to carry my water bottles with mr on the river. I think I bought it from Fishwest Compay on the internet. There also were youtube videos showing how you can use it. I use it for Smallmouth fishing using a spinning rod and it holds about all the gear I used to carry in my vest and it has more than enough room for fly fishing. I had looked at Orvis sling pack but I liked the pockets for water bottles on the Fishpond. It also seems to be very well made and has a lifetime guarantee. -
St. Croix Panfish Spinning Rod - 7Ft Lt. Extra Fast Tip
exiledguide replied to mic's topic in Buy - Sell - Trade
Every one has there preferences, I throw a 5ft 9in. Falcon for stream smallmouth and it handles !/32 oz to 1/4 oz jigheads built on #2 up to 3/0 hooks with 3 or 4' grubs or 4 to six inch worms and it handles crankbaits and topwaters well but I have to admit it not stiff enough for any but thesmallest spinnerbaits. I only wade when I stream fish so I'm limited to one rod. -
Recommend Me A Rod Or Two
exiledguide replied to drew03cmc's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I have no problem with imports but an American company selling made in Godless communist red china or hethan viet nam is big buisness spiting on any one who ever served in the military cause we were told we had to defend the free enterprise from communism only to see the jobs at Zebco, Rebel, etc sent to communist countries. Every time I pick up a product made over there I put it down because it makes me think of friends of mine who never came back from Viet Nam because they had to defend our so called free enerprise. Summing up, you are right Drew and the rest of you can who thimk this is not a problem need to pull your head out of butt. -
Did anyone else get an email from these guys seems to be a pretty interesting place I don't pick up a fly rod much anymore but I think I'll head over and check 'em out. I always try to support local shops.

St. Croix Panfish Spinning Rod - 7Ft Lt. Extra Fast Tip
exiledguide replied to mic's topic in Buy - Sell - Trade
mic, I got a St Croix Premier 5 1/2 ft ultra light fast action I throw my 1/32oz jigs with it for bluegill really like it I don't know how it would work for heavier jigheads It's rated to 3/16oz. I bought it to throw 1/32 0z jighead with a #8 hook and !" power wiggler or !" gulp alive fish fry and it gets the job done for me. I've been told I needed a longer rod to throw that size jig but it seems to get the jig to where the fish are. That also was my lure of choice when I caught trout below Carpenter dam on Lake Catherine in Arkansas, the power wiggler, I didn't find gulp alive until I moved back to Missouri. -
Mitch I think Lindy had a Fuzzy Grub on the market a loooong time ago similar to the bou tube.
