John, Take a camera next time, post pictures here, and then maybe WM will find another reason to doubt you. Honestly, anyone can post a lot of talk about lots and lots of big fish, but who knows? Then again, some may post small numbers and not much to talk about, but maybe he caught a ton of big fish. Who knows? Who cares? This is the internet, folks. If you take everything at face value, then have I got an investment deal for you!!! I don't know John. He might be the best fisherman in the world or maybe the biggest liar in the world or maybe somewhere in between. I don't know and don't care. But I have no reason to doubt him. As long as he's not trying to get in my pocketbook, I'll read his posts about lots of big fish and the ones that got away. Keep posting, John... But I DO like to see pictures of big fish... As most of us do. We're into "pheesh porn" here...

What kind of snake was it? I would be careful kicking a cottonmouth... they "kick" back sometimes... And those fangs make big holes in your waders...

Dubbing wax is used to help hold the dubbing material to the thread while tying. I don't think it does much afterwards, but may help hold it on the fly a bit longer during use. Beeswax is a pretty good dubbing wax, so keep a few of those candle pieces for sure. I don't use dubbing wax. I think my syliva must have some waxy substance in it because I have never had the need for wax for my dubbing... Felt for a nymph? I'm not sure how you are using it. I would think that maybe running a bit of felt in a coffee grinder (one that has the two blades similar to a food processor or blender) might make pretty good dubbing. But felt might be a bit "limp" compared to other dubbing material. If you are looking for a more spiky look, try blending in some beard trimmings with your dubbing. I'll be glad to donate some in a couple of weeks... With that in mind, there are a couple million dubbing recipes out there to give your fly the look you are looking for.

Through the smoke, we can see that there has been some reaction to the high prices. Overall, gas consumption (demand) is down. However, there has yet to be a viable reaction to this in the form of lower prices - unless, of course, the "excuse" is the prices have not risen as much as they would if the demand were "stable." How short is the memory of the American public? Thirty years ago we had a similar situation and the answer came from Japan. Fuel economy was the answer then and is the answer now. Why oh why do "soccer moms" think they have to have a gigantic gas guzzling SUV to take the kids to practice and games and then use it to drive all over hell and half of Georgia? I have a 4X4 that I bought for hunting and fishing. I used it only for those purposes or when I had a need for a pickup or third vehicle. My main vehicle was a much more economical car. I sold the car due to an economic crunch for some "operating capital" and now wish I had it back. With the job situation and other factors, I'm "stuck" with the truck and can't justify buying or trading. But you can bet, if and when I find another job, I will be looking for something to drive to work. But I've heard too many people say they are not giving up their big rigs and will just keep paying more at the pump. That's just what the oil companies want to hear. You do know that the oil companies and auto makers are in cahootz with each other, right? I drove down hwy 60 this weekend and from Diggins to Seymore saw several Amish in their buggies. That is getting more and more appealing every time I pass a "petrol station"...

Spring River Enforcement.....Looks like the People Spoke
Terry Beeson replied to Danoinark's topic in Spring River (Mo/Ar)
Well, let's just issue everyone "downtown" guns and knives and let them have at each other then... Hell, better yet, just ship 'em all to the middle east where that's about the way it is now... If the Spring River is going to be a place that does not like drunks and druggies, then if you're a drunk or druggie, don't go... makes sense to me... -

Springfield NewsLeader online poll so far this morning... *************************** Online Poll Do you believe the climbing gasoline prices are the result of market manipulations by Big Oil, or is it normal market forces of supply an demand at work? 86.3% Manipulations 13.7% Market forces Total Votes: 680 *************************** Gas prices will affect the tourist business to some extent. People tend to budget so much for a trip and higher gas prices will mean the percent going to fuel will be higher, leaving the percentages for lodging, attractions, and souvenirs to suffer. I venture a guess that many will go for cheaper lodging and some just to cut back on "trinkets" they buy. Maybe eat burgers instead of seafood. I just don't think they will cut back that much on travel. I'll be in my back yard cooking ribeyes instead of burning gas this weekend... Well, maybe a trip or two to Taney...

Well, I didn't make it down. This summer cold or whatever the heck it is that I've got kept me awake all night then couldn't get my butt around Saturday morning. By the time I was getting over it, we were ready to head down to Arkansas for a family thing. Didn't even take my fishing gear with me... Glad you guys had a good time without me...

Global Warming - Schlobal Schwarming... The bottom line is ths - We (people in general) are screwing up the planet. And I point the finger at myself as much as at anyone. Global Warming - Fact or Fiction... Who cares? We need to stop doing the stupid stuff we do and try to focus on the coming years and generations instead of five minutes from now.

THIS JUST IN: Former Drury president to lead Upper White River Basin Foundation Kathryn Buckstaff © 2007, Springfield News-Leader BRANSON — John Moore, who served as president of Drury University in Springfield for 22 years, has accepted the position of executive director of the Upper White River Basin Foundation. “John Moore has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the issues and importance of the environment, and particularly to the waters of the White River basin,” said foundation board president Peter Herschend. Moore also served on the founding board of the foundation. The foundation’s goal is “to make the four lakes of the watershed basin — Beaver, Table Rock, Taneycomo and Bull Shoals — the cleanest man-made lakes in North America,” Herschend said. Moore earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees in history at Yale University, and a doctorate at Harvard. Since retiring from Drury in 2005, Moore, an Eagle Scout, has worked in communication and development for the area Boy Scout Council. “I have always loved the outdoors and know the importance of our water quality,” Moore said. Moore will initially work with Steve Stewart, who has served as director for nearly two years.

Come to the Nature Center in Springfield tomorrow (Thursday) night... Dorber will be at the SMFF meeting giving a demo on how graphite blanks are made. I'm sure he'll have a few rods to check out as well. Fly tying at 6pm, meeting at 7pm, program to follow... I have to vouch for the RebRods as well (Dorber blanks) as I have a 9 ft 4 wt UltraWeave. A bit slow for what you're talking about, but I LOVE that rod... especially for high sticking.

FIFTEEN YARD PENALTY!!!!! Dang it... I KNEW there was something else we were going to make sure you knew, Nathan... ALWAYS take your fly rod with you when you are going fly fishing... Seriously... been there... done that... got the tee shirt... I drove an hour and a half to fish one time and found my rod was with me, but the reel was still on the bench at home... IN FACT... I might be able to top that. I drove 200 miles to deer hunt for four days. I got up the next morning, got to the farm, took my .30-06 out of the case, and spent the next hour looking for the clip that was still in the gun cabinet at home... I guess at least I had the rifle and shells. Used it as a "single shot..." but didn't need even that...

I'll second TFO... I'd also look at a Scott... But I'm wondering if you want to go from 24s to big mohairs you might want to consider a 5 wt? I'm a bit on the fence between a 8 1/2 and 9 foot for what you want...

Supply and demand is one part of it. The other is called "cash flow." For any business, one of the keys is to have a consistant cash flow to keep things in the black. Retailers discount goods for two reasons - to reduce inventory that will free up shelf space for seasonal goods and to generate revenue. Remember the sale after the ice storm at BCO? Many retailers ran sales to get folks back into the stores and to generate revenue or cash flow. The same holds true for the lodging industry. During "off season" or for other reasons, the rates are different. This is a marketing and accounting plan for revenue generation. Motels in Branson still have bills to pay in January and February and if they can generate a little revenue to help, it's better than zero sales... By the way... filled up at the Kum & Go on West Bypass yesterday for $2.839 per gallon. Almost every other sign going home was $2.899. I'm sure it won't be that low this afternoon when I go by... The oil companies are gearing up for Memorial Day and school letting out. That means summer vacation and lots of families travelling. I say we all stay home this year and enjoy our back yards instead of DisneyWorld, the gulf, Vegas, the Grand Canyon, etc. If demand is well short of the oil companies predictions, they won't know how to react. But I'm sure they would raise prices to make up for the "loss" due to the low demand.... sheesh....

Although I've not had the pleasure of enjoying the rewards of one of his lectures, Dennis Slane puts on a Dutch Oven cooking class at the Conclave in Mt Home every year. The smells really make your mouth water. I've never mastered the dutch oven technique, but I know what comes out of them, if done by a "seasoned pro" is some of the best eating you'll come across. Anyone know of any chuckwagon cooking rendevous in the area? Yeah, Don... hold a gun to his head...

Ah, yes... Brookies at JFK. First trout I ever caught out of the LR was a nice Brookie... Uh... blackberry cobbler in a dutch oven? Sounds like a good dish for the May 19th get together... hint hint... Even if you're not planning on attending, you could just drop it by with the ice cream maker full of homemade vanilla ice cream...

What did you do with the sucker? Sucker Days is the 19th, you know... You and Leonard better leave the sucker fishing to me...

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you'll fit in just fine here...

I bet she's just stroking his ego... She outfished him, but didn't let him see all the fish she caught...
