  1. TU Trains Alaskan Youth as Fly Fishing Guides The salmon-rich Nushagak River in southwest Alaska became a classroom to a group of Bristol Bay young people this summer who converged there to learn how to be fly fishing guides. TU helped sponsor the academy, located in the Alaska Native village of Ekwok. Check out the audio slideshow.
  2. Even if you do have the right to be on Lake St. Louis there is no way to get onto the waters via the stream Pereau creek which is not a navigatible stream at either end of Lake St louis. One end of the lake is a waterfall about 10 foor high and the other end , the entrance of Pereau ck is under highway 40 bridge and has a licensed entrance filter that cannot be passed with a boat without leaving the water onto private property and then re entering the lake. Believe me the entrances to the lake are unpassable without crossing private property. Actually I inquired into the matter just earlier with one of the partol officers who is a friend of mine..
  3. All good choices Jerod ... I would also add a hopper above those selections in a dropper rig this time of year or a peach or multicolored egg fly pattern above those scuds or midges. Don't for get the micro jigs about five foot deep with slow water in Peach, sculpin, green or pink fished under the smallest indicator possible.
  4. Kyle: You can say those words above BP Or CAB but only if in a sentence with uniformed, cocky, out of what you came for or rude. One clerk in the fly section actually told me that using sally's hard as nails would keep the fish from hitting flies. Also told me that they didn't stock 2488BL scud hooks because there was no demand for them. DUH There is an older guy that works Bass Pro fly shop that is pretty nice but not much help. They are always out of the most common supplies that I need just before a trip. Hooks especially! Their dumbell (Lead ones)tie on's for streamers and stick on eyes are worthless
  5. Jake told me that the cost to fish c/r was $42.
  6. A fishing buddy asked for some advice on a recent fishing outing to Westover Farms and I asked him to give me a report of his trip. Jake had never fished a fly rod before so I loaned him my St. Croix 4 wgt and gave him a little mini lesson and and he took some flies I had tied for him earlier. He and friends traveled to Westover Farms to check it out last Friday. Westover Farms offers two worlds of fishing ironically within walking distance. There's a spring-fed river that runs the perimeter of the property offering the typical Ozark trout fishing you'd find in any state park: variation of deep holes, little to no ripples where lunkers lurk to shallow, ankle-deep runs for spawning trout not interested in biting anything. Running directly through the property is a crooked mini-creek with more twists and turns than a Formula racing track. The banks of this creek change sporadically from natural wildflowers and other native bushes shoulder-height for cover to open areas with direct access to the water. The creek ranges with about 10-feet across to 3-feet across is most areas. Casting is difficult in about half of it. It's easier just to dangle the fly over a bush and drop it into the water. In nearly all cases, the hatchery-born trout are piled on top of each other and not easily spooked as they are used to seeing folks walk about. At the source and end of this creek lies many waterfalls more for looks than sport fishing. If can't or don't like casting, stay here and simply drop an assortment of flies into the bubbly water and yank out big fish. Fishing in all area is limited to single-hook flies. Jake is a tournament Bass angler and LOZ is his haunts. He modestly related to me that he did fairly well fishing a hopper and a scud dropper but only caught around 30 fish for the long day. Mostly on the scuds but some on the hopper also. He got really good sight fishing and caught one nearing 3 pounds along with many quality fish. He is now in the market for a fly rod. Phil, you will know him from the group of Edwards Jones folks that visit your resort every winter and rent a pontoon to fish. He fished Thom's tied jigs there on a spinning rod mostly but I believe he will be sporting a new fly rod when he visits this fall.
  7. Even lower than that .... someone broke into our Church Monday morning, got all of the computers, printers, lots of sound equiptment etc, and sawed a hole in the safe in the financial office and stole most of the Sunday offering. Mostly checks for deposit only but what a shame. Fortunately the Lord is still in control and we will do fine with what is left and "... The Lord will repay..." both the givers and the stealers just with different rewards. Scum bags for sure. BTW, I love fishing that stretch of the river. It is always a great place to match the hatch. Usually plenty of places to fish without much company also.
  8. Settling rule is the required amount of time between buying and selling the same stock funds. It can very with different trading methods. I believe scottrade is 3 days.
  9. Real talent there to be Quiet disgusted. I am usually not very quiet when I am disgusted. In fact I am usually quite vocal. "singing the blues"
  10. What stream was that in N. C. Illinois? Farm boy from Illinois (southern ILL)
  11. My dear wife Betty passed on to her eternal reward last evening in my arms. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary on August 6th with our families. How wonderful to know that her long 6 year battle with Alzheimers is over and she is safely at home with her Lord through her faith in Jesus Christ. She will be sorely missed by all who knew this wonderful lady who devoted her life to her family and the teaching of God's message to Children everywhere she went with her life's example and through His Holy word. 12. ON the white in Arkansas they catch them with small hooks off of the boat docks and put them in minnow bucket and hover them over big browns. Very effective but not my cup of tea. It does work I seen a guide out of Sportsman catch several big Browns one week that I was there.
  13. Sorry to correct you all but slow death rig is a TV remote with dead batteries with Oprah interviewing Ellen Digenerate on a large screen TV showing a two hour special.
  14. A few friends and I will be down 10-14-18-10 for a nice visit. First time Oct. Taneycomo trip. Looking forward to it. If there is anything anyone thinks we should know, please feel free to reply. Definitely looking to set up a guide for Thursday as well. Hopefully get to meet a few of you down there throughout the week. Cory If you are looking for a guide it would be good to nail that down now. Lilley's can fix you up fishing out of their dock. I set up a friend of mine recently to do just that. She had never fished Taneycomo before and only trout fishing one time. Here are the results:
  15. Bob Sunday afternoon he hooked and landed a 7.5lb 23 inch Rainbow near Short Creek. I was dumbfounded after we got it into the boat. I asked him if he wanted to turn it loose so it could grow bigger and he reminded me that I told him he could keep a big one if he caught it. So unfortunately I had to keep my word Hey Bob: I am happy to hear that you did so well on your trip. Something to keep in mind is that all you need for a mounted fish is a picture. You will not be able to tell the difference and to know that your son caught the fish and it is swimming around in the same water as the exact replic is on his wall will make the memory even better. I was staying at Stetson's on the white in Arkansas and was playfully chiding the owner there about the 8 or so Big Browns on his wall in the lodge waiting for the anglers that caught them to pick them up. He told me that only one of them was actually from the fish carcass and all of the others were replicas from pictures. He told me that if I could pick out the real fish he would give me a free dinner. After 3 guesses I bought my own lunch. They are that real. Just food for thought in the future. Thanks for the report. Thom Thom
  16. Gavin tip is a great starter for clean jigs. Also run your thread around the cut end near the eye two turns loosely then pull straight down hard and pinch those turns with your thumb and forefinger tightly then run several more turns up over the end and to the eye. You will find that this will keep the maribou in place and make a nice clean head for glueing and staying put.
  17. These are examples of fish landed and released fishing with jigs and flies 8/2-5. The bite was much better with a little water flowing. I noticed that the first day when we fished in the restricted area that if the fish like the one in the boat were held for pictures or not revived quickly they had to be put into the net for a while before they swam off. I releasaed three (17 to 18 inches and fat, fat fat)the size of this one as quickly as possible but they were slow to take off. The one Zach was holding was caught near the mouth of fall creek and revived and swam off without a problem. Not much water flowing this day but the next two days lots of water flowing and less problem with reviving.
  18. Most lanscape companies can arrange for those kinds of rocks to be delivered. Check out slide # 14 in this company in your area. click on this link: http://outdoorconceptsbranson.com/outside-garden-center/ there is a fountian with some shelf rocks at the left of the fall. click on outside garden center to find more samples. If you decide to stock trout in your fountian I can arrange for a product testing some week soon after stocking. hopes this helps. Thom
  19. I can see where all of you are coming from but if the animals are going to die anyway???? I have to chuckle a bit when I go to the store and see the little section of chicken displayed in the meat case which has a label on it saying: " Chickens humanely raised and killed" I am sure that makes the chickens much happier when they finally die to know that someone really cared enough to put a little tag on their package when they were sold. I know for sure that the 5 cent tag makes the butcher much happier when he gets a 20% mark up on the price for the so called organic, range raised, stress free chicken. Their eventual conscience ridden purcusers cared enough to spend the very best. I wondered if they sent a Hallmark card to the chicken farm owners to post on the barn.
  20. Glad you had a good time. I just got here today and am heading out tofish tomorrow. i heve been coming here for 30 +_ years and still loving it. Down with daughteer grandkids and will fish til Friday. Thom
  21. Looking forward to seeing it in person next week along with my trip out of Lilleys on Thursday. MMM gotta be a great week best mount ever, hopefully best guided trip ever.
  22. JD and Snagged: I also feel your pain. I have to put a 7 ft fence around everthing I raise and spray flowers with pepper mix or deer away. I limit myself to tomatoes, potatoes(only enough for new potatoes with beans), a few pepper and zuch plants. I use the hog wire close mesh fence and it keeps the rabbits out unless I forget to close the gate. My first fence was only 5 foot and the deer jumped it and ate all of my KY wonder pole beans to the stalks in one night just right before the first harvest was ready. With the heat my tomatoes are all getting ripe at once. Probably had 1/2 bushel this week and I will be gone all next week fish Taney (poor me) so when i get back if there is not some rain it will be a disaster. I was getting coffee monday morning and looked out my kitchen window to see a huge doe eating the last of the day lily buds around my fountian. Loaded up and when I turned the door knob he took off like a cannon for the cedar cover. I do harvest squirrel and rabbits regularly but all that accomplishes is to make room for the next ones on the pecking order to move into their terrirtory. rabbit and squrirrel jerky is pretty tasty but lots of work. Hey JD I am hanging onto my guns, beliefs but losing my religion some this summer. Lucklily I have a forgiving God cause these critters sure get under my skin. Thanks for posting your garden news it is always enjoyable and a good read. Even though I don't always agree with some of your posts I seldom fail to learn something new from what you share with the forum.
  23. Chris: I am planning on being at Taney next week from 1st until the 6th. When are you going to be there?
  24. Thanks for the report Phil. My grandson, his dad and I will be up next week for 6 days (Aug 1-6). I printed the info off so I can refresh my fly box supply. I will probally be in sometime to rent a boat. It is easier than pulling mine down and back. Grandson fishes mostly at night since Leonard put him on to it but I can barely navigate during the day on the rocky bottom. I am thinking about boating up to the shallows below lookout and wading there since the bottom is a little less rocky or anchoring off there on the downside of the island.
