By the way, I'm not a country club kid, but I did grow up hustling those types. Followed me through college.

Better watch that statement, I'll play you for anything you want to go for. Come up to KC anytime, for the right amount of money I'll ditch work. Straight up, no strokes, play the ball down, USGA rules.

I would take objection to this part of the statement. I could see closing off a stream for spawning trout that are self-sustaining. I do not get into this native, non-native stuff, it is an arbitrary line that one person uses to subject the other side to criticism. My fish is better than your fish. Why prohibit gigging on blue ribbon trout streams? Because they are self-sustaining, something that is not common in Missouri and there are plenty of alternative waters for giggers. I would really like to know why a fish that has been in these streams, such as crane, since the late 1800's isn't deserving of protection? Because of some arbitrary native title that we attach to certain fish, i.e. smallmouth. I am not knocking smallmouth, they are a beautiful fish that deserves more protection. However, I am growing tired of this "all trout should be treated as if they are stocked" mentality. Yes, all fish are here for enjoyment to a point, but conservation is necessary to ensure that our "enjoyment" continues for wild self-sustaining blue ribbon streams.

I guess I just don't know what else a restriction on wading is, other than a restriction on wading . Anyways, I wouldn't have a problem with closing down a section of stream for a period of time, but I would wonder what the purpose would be. Taney is not a self supporting stream, and people like Lilley and other guides make their living of guiding and lodging for trout fishing. I'm not in the guiding business, but I would have to imagine that the guides are booked right now, and a restriction on fishing this area would directly affect their income. The real problem seems to be the way in which people are handling the fish they catch. The simple solution is to ban the manner of handling that is causing harm to the fish. Other than that you would have to chalk it up to bad manners, frown on the guy and walk away shaking your head.

Jeremy, I admire your heart in this issue and I think you only want was is best for this fishery. However, I have a hard time seeing a restriction on wading but not boating working as a law. I know for a fact that if MO did pass a law that read to this manner that I would file an equal protection action with the state. Not saying that it is a bad idea, and I think the heart is there, but to say that wading is illegal in this area but other forms of traffic are allowed seems to run afoul of public property in my mind,in that one side can but the other can't. There are other solutions that are less restrictive than a complete ban on wading in this area, such as C&R regulations during a certain time of the year. Couple these C&R with a prohibition of removing a trout from the water and alot of this photo nonsense is eliminated. Just my .02

Check out this video of a guy driving his boat into a water spout, and then the links to how big this water spout was. Talk about boater safety. -

I think this tops all of mine, if nothing else for the reason that I got a vivid picture of the mess created. I also think using a john for the good ol' #2 is a crepy fishing story -
I was wondering if anyone had a picture of a Peppy Scud. I see that there is a link for it, but it looks like the pictures have been removed. Thanks

You could call it the lamberts fly, home of the thrown cornbread. Are people still hooking into bronws up there?

Spinning Gear On Small Stream Trout
troutfiend1985 replied to mic's topic in Wild Trout Creeks & Streams
That's why i kept telling him to bring the spinning rod I usually bring a spinning rod with me when I go to a blue ribbon stream. Often I leave it in the car, but you never know when its going to be windy or when your going to find out that today you stink with the fly rod. Fishing our blue ribbon streams is a unique challenge, and one that will keep you coming back for more. I started fishing blue ribbon streams over three years ago and I was horrible. I couldn't understand why the stuff I was doing at Roaring and Bennett wasn't working at Crane lol. Now I can't seem to figure out that the stuff I do at Crane is no match for the gut hatch at Bennett I figure you can't go wrong with our little wild streams, even if you don't catch anything you still get the day to yourself. Westover Farms Bank Owner Goes Under
troutfiend1985 replied to ness's topic in General Angling Discussion
I totally understand what you are saying, but I'm just looking at it from the owners standpoint(at least what I assume the owner would be thinking). Here you have a company that appears to be dying and unless something changes there is no money to be made. I totally agree that I would rather prefer a natural experience as a fisherman, but if I'm the owner something has to keep the lights on. Whatever is going on down there doesn't appear to be working, so something has to change IMO. -
Westover Farms Bank Owner Goes Under

I'm just throwing an idea out there, and it gets at what Joe said about the lack of people wanting to spend money to catch trout when there are free options nearby. But if the place offers a type of fishing that you cannot get nearby, then you have a leg up. I don't know much about Westover as I have never been there, but I think if they would/could stock brook or cutthroat trout in the stream they would draw more attention. I don't know if they can do this either legally or if the stream could hold them, but I would think stocking fish like this would increase their attention. Hell, if it was my property I would find a way to get some unique type of trout in there, like apache trout or golden trout or hell bull trout if I could find a way to get them. Just something to make my business unique in the sense that you cannot get this experience anywhere else nearby. Just my .02 -

Creepy Fishing Sightings

Yeah, the idea of an alligator or a mountain lion on a leash is creepy. Reminds me of that guy in New York who was keeping either a tiger or a lion in his apartment as a pet. One day the guy ran out of food, and well the tiger made cat chow of him. -
Inferno Pepper Spray
troutfiend1985 replied to Flyflinger's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I've used pepper spray on dogs before. Worked great, full grown Rott was trying to attack my moms dog. THe dog took off like I shot him in the butt(minus the limping and bleeding). Should work well for you. -
Creepy Fishing Sightings

Haven't seen alligators on a leash before, but I have seen a lady walking her cat on a leash. I've also heard my towns mayor debate another person on why cats should be leashed. Darn cat leashers. Makes you wonder huh? Anyways about that footprint in the bunker, I know that it wasn't a dogs or a bobcats print, which is what people usually say when they hear about these footprints. I would have to say that my other creepy encounter came at Capps down by the lower access. As I was wading up there was this guy spin fishing, I said a nice hello and asked how he was doing. He went on about something that I didn't care to listen about and then started wondering if I was a game warden(like he hated game wardens and police). Needless to say I called the poachers hotline, don't know what happened to him but he was one creepy dude. -
I don't know if you guys will understand, but I get a kick out of watching monsterquest on the History Channel. Call me silly, but nothing says American better that a bunch of guys out wandering around the backwoods with high tech gadgetry chasing bigfoot and then stopping to see if the poo is fresh. I think the closest that I have gotten to a monsterquest experience is when I was fishing on a private golf courses pond in KC during the early morning and seen some giant paw prints in one of the bunkers. The grounds crew at the course swore that they had mountain lions, and the footprints in the bunkers don't seem to lie. This was before that guy in eastern KS ran over a mountain lion with his car. Whole thing freaked me out pretty good, went back to the car, thanked the greens keeper, and left. No fish is worth that risk. I was wondering if anyone here has seen anything creepy while they were out fishing.

I have no clue how many fishing licenses MDC sells, but I imagine that giving a survey to everyone would be an absolute nightmare for the management. I hope I wasn't coming off as a conspiracy theorist, I was just curious as to how the determination process was made.

You miss the point. I'm not saying that oneshot is the cause of any problems, nor is he doing anything wrong. Its the idea that the state can regulate in order to protect its fisheries. If everyone keeps a daily limit everyday, then the fishing declines. So yeah, no problem with oneshot whatsoever but his idea on regulation is another story.

His names of his flies indicates to me that he has some issues. Cricket check out some of his unedited fly names.

Went out on Friday with my girlfriend. Slow day, but we enjoyed it none the less. We were fly fishing and caught some panfish. Mainly soft hackles and peacock bugs were working. I did get out by myself a few weeks ago and caught another 3.5lbs largemouth on the fly rod, using an olive jig. Fishing has seemed to improve since this summer.

Spinning Gear On Small Stream Trout
troutfiend1985 replied to mic's topic in Wild Trout Creeks & Streams
Heck, I think you should bring your spinning rod down. I think the last place to get comfortable on the fly rod is a blue ribbon stream. Put aside the facts that a). the back casting room is limited, b)the fish are wary, c). more emphasis is put on your ability to cast accuratley and d). that the constant snags and frustration incorporated in learning fly fishing are prevelant. We still haven't even gotten into wading, not spooking the fish and what flies to use. There is a lot to learn about fly fishing, and then to put small spring fed wild trout streams on top of the learning curve, I think you would be asking for furstration. Now I would bring the long rod down, but I would limit the action of it until you a) either catch some fish, or nothing is working jig wise and your would at least like to waive the fly rod around. As far as fly fishing advice, take it slow, and wait for your first cast. Remember to check the regulations of the area you're fishing. Olive jigs would be my go to, followed by black and yellow. Just my take though. -
Hold on there Oneshot, I think you're a nice guy but I cannot agree whatsoever with that statement. Yes, I understand that you are on a fixed income, and I highly doubt that you by yourself could kill the Niangua smallmouth population. But numerous people keeping fish too often will surely hurt that fishery. I think what Eric is referring to is the tragedy of the commons, if I don't keep this fish then somebody else will keep this fish the next time that it is caught. Just my .02
