It was 31 degrees at 6:30 AM and 1586 anglers were standing in the Current River at the Starting Gun. This was kind of a slow opening compared to others over the years ( for the weather forecasted 70 degrees. ) We had more than that with 14" of snow on the ground.

Guns are stupid they kill people. OH! I think the thing is SOME People with guns are stupid and some people with gigs are too. Not the gun, hunting, or the gigging sport's..

Guys the bait is made by Trout Magnet it comes in 2.5 and 3.5" the patterns are Rainbow trout, Brook trout, Brown trout, Hawk, the ZG. They sell for $5.25 in the shop. The brown trout and Brook trout patterns are the best on the Current river and the Rainbow worked good for me on the Little Red. A Note The hawk is a killer smallmouth bait on the Piney. A tip I would suggest when fishing for trout with these baits. Pinch the barbs or file them off, a lot less likely to hurt or kill the fish.

This little guy was made with Spirit River Bug Parts. Easy to tie and great for both trout and bass.

I have some information on getting your old boots with new soles. RMR 811 Oak Street Salida, CO 719.539-1455. RMR uses the Vibram Stream Tread Or Aqua Shealth Rubber. They are capable of resoling. The Stream read is $65.00 per pair and the Aqua Stealth $55.00. They have a 10% discount for more than 10 pair. You pay shipping going and coming. They did all of the Idaho Fish and Game departments for them and the Yellow Rangers boots for them. e-mail boots@rmresole.com. New boots will run you from $65.00 to over $300.00 so there you go.

They did not add any structure the the fly area as of yet. The depth of the area they are working on now went from about 2' to 4.5 at the deepest. The area they are working on is just above the dam and about 50 yards above. and will be about 8' deep till the first high water then it will settle out to about 5.5' for a while. by the end of the year it will be back to less than 5'. That is if we don't have much high water. Basically they are just placing a settling pool above the dam. This is a never ending cycle for the park. The dam acts like s sleuth box and the sand and silt settle behind it. Pigeon creek bring in tons of stuff every thine there is a rise in the water, The water shed for the upper Pigeon Creek is about all cleared farm land. Below the park not so much. The only way to control it would build a dam on Pigeon Creek above the park. That was looked at years ago but they found some artifacts where the lake would have covered them. End of study. End of chances of the dam.

The MDC has started today to remove sand, gravel,& vegetation from the fly area above the dam. Deepening it to 8'.

The Current River is a moving river and due to high water in 2011 the stream has sand, and other materials settle in. With no other way of removing it the stream would over time become unable to hold fish. (at the amount which are stocked)The amount of guest and foot traffic the stream gets it is the only way to keep the river at a depth people expect. Inside the park is the only areas that get the removal. Over 400,000 people moved through Montauk Last Year, over 86,000 anglers fished in the park also. In short the public loved the park to death. The removal of sand is just a form of first aid. They are working on other ways of moving the sand by placing current direction structures in the stream. If I am correct this is the first time in three years the MDC has had to do this, & it's only done in a small area of the stream. The Blue Ribbon area does not get effected except for the flow of insect larva which is dislodged and flows down stream. So in fact this would be a great time to fish the area with Sow-bugs, Caddis, Scuds, Midges, San Juan Worms etc.

The MDC has started selective material removal from the Current River inside Montauk Park today. The Spring Branch ( Bait Area.) is the starting section of the stream. The area above the dam is unknown at this time.

Note: March 15 the MDC starts shocking every other day for about two weeks. This slows the bite down quiet a bit, they take breeding stock for the Warsaw Hatchery. Shocking is usually early in the day so plan your trips accordingly.

2-13-12 Today was the last day of the Catch & release season. Some of the MFFA was enjoying the park fishing. The trout were jumping on the small BWO 20 and the winter midge #24. This is the only week we have had snow during the season and the guy's were enjoying it.

I wish that the same kind of thing could go through on the Brown Trout State Wide. (limit 1 20") Unfortunately the brown trout don't have the support the anglers as the Smallmouth. And when told the MDC say they see no problem. But we lost an abundance of the trophy browns this year and we will every year that they migrate into open un-restricted waters. But until a commissioner of MDC is on board that likes to trophy brown fish it's a pipe dream to get it changed. Just saying.

The size 18 Black Elk Hair Caddis is a good all around dry fly on cloudy days, or in rain. Any time the Griffin's gnat is working the black 18 elk hair will work. The gnat is sometimes better when used in size 20 or smaller. The Elk Hair 18 is a good in the eddy film water just out of the feeder flow.

I have used Great Stuff Insulating Foam sealant by Dow. You can whittle into any bug shape you want & it paints up great. You can make a basic pattern in plaster of Paris for production molds. It is tough and floats higher than foam, also the Gorilla Glue supper glue will not melt it. Only down side is it's kind of messy till you get the hang of it,(always wear golves) but a little goes a long way.

I would like to add also in defence of the Montauk Resort Lodge, we all work together to try and make everyone's visit to the Current River a pleasure. They offer things that Reed's don't, and Reed's have things the Lodge don't have. Even Happy Pappy's Campground & store has things none of the others have, they have great pies and wine. Everyone working together is the only way the area can be successful.

Joe: Here is a peek inside the shop, just in case you drove by without noticing.

Korkers for the one boot 3 or more choices of sole. For the $$$ top of the pile. Had mine for 3 years with not 1 thing I can say bad about them.
-
A question! Do the posting of fish above 3# on so called Lunker Boards in the tackle shops, and lodges cause or promote the taking of big trout illegally? If so what could be done to lessen it without completely doing away with them? They are great for the kids and first time catches of 3# or bigger. Some anglers have over 20 catches posted on these boards. The weight of the fish seems to be object of the competition on these boards. Would limiting the number of times an angler could post on the boards help, or not placing the weight of the fish? I realise that this will not stop anything between anglers who compete for big trout but just looking for a way to slow it a bit. Every angler is proud of catching a big Rainbow or Brown Trout, Bass, Crappie, what ever, and deserves the privilege of letting others know. But where should it come to be something that shows or suggest something is going on other than good angling? Just Saying!

After fishing the Blue Ribbon area this fall & winter and talking to anglers every day that have been on it I can say that last summer we lost almost all of the 5+ Brown Trout out of the area. Over 40 trophy Brown Trout were taken out of the park in a 60 day period of fishing. Most all on bait and jigs. Knowing the time it takes to grow these fish it is a shame something can't be done to protect them inside the park. (20" limit 1 State Wide?)
