O! I did not mention that the MDC cut grass in the park spring branch yesterday morning and all the coon tale hit us about 1:30. Even tried a # 20 sow bug when the grass started drifting on us.

Berkley Bait and Glo Balls is the same same to me That is just the way I fish in the blue ribbon area. Now the park is a different deal. And Gut flies are not something I use in the park or outside. Just seems to much like baiting even though I know it's not. I did see a fillet out 13" fish about 1/2 way down the streach.

Started at the wire at 8:30 and the first bend held 25 or 30 rainbows 3 were about 18 to 19" tried a hopper with a #18 midge dropper with not any results. About 9:00 we got into a scenario that I have not seen all summer. The blue wing were hatching by the millions. We hooked up a size 18-20 cdc blue wing and cast it into the action. The fish were coming from everywhere and sipping the bugs off the surface. The fish were keyed into something our pattern didn't have and I saw fish sip bugs from just less than an inch from my fly. Our pattern was same size and color as the hatch. But the hatch was so thick there was just to much competition from the real bug against our fake. This went on for the next hour and past the cabin's. Then the river went dead, no rises and the fish became almost pined to the bottom. I drifted BWO's and Zebra Midges on 8X tippet on the heads of the fish and they would not move an inch. We managed to pick up a couple of small rainbows on crackle backs. These trout were not even lying in the main food drift of the stream. They were in the shallow water at least 20" from the majority of the bigger fish. The first bend has always been a honey hole for at least 1 Brown of 20" or a couple 19 Rainbows, and they were there only they were stuck to the river bed like they were nailed to it. The only movement I saw was three small Rainbows doing the courting circles. A hopper pattern with a tan scud dropper took one fish and two rises on the hopper. We saw four nice brown trout in the whole section from the park to Tan Vat. All four were laying on the bottom right in the fast current of river in less than 24" of water. We drifted a Red San Juan worm over one and actually touched the fish with it and no movement at all, not even a dart out of the way. I have fished this stretch of water for 25 years and never saw the fish act this way. My fingers are sore from tying on flies I have 5 fly boxes and not one fly drew any follow or attracted any fish. The only thing that I saw that was not in character for this trip was the size of the hatch that went on early and shut down the fish so quickly. I am not an expert by any means but I have never fished this section and caught the size and amount of fish as I did yesterday. I usually fish this section in 3 hours and catch at least 15 fish on 2 over 20". Yesterday we fished it for 7.5 hours and had less than 5 small fish apiece. Now please tell me where I went wrong! What should I have tried? It was actually painful to sea my MATCH THE HATCH fly drift through a see of sippers and not be at least looked at. We saw only one other angler fishing a spinner on a spincast all day. I did not drift a egg pattern because I just don't do that LOL!

10 pointer the event went well except the rain and cold weather we had a good turn out. The winners of the Prizes were. Bruce Henning, Alan Blattel, Jon Hesskamp, Dave Reed, Dave Oldham, Tom Willis, Mark Blaylock, A.J. Snelson, Austin Nieman, Bill Traw, Nick Erlacker, Kevin Cole, Madison Cole. Bill Traw was the overall big winner with a Pair of Korker Boots and The Elk River Rod total $400.00. Fish numbers were a little low with Austin Nieman catching the most. He caught 23 trout one brown over 20" and several Bows at 19". He was using a flashback dropper. but every winner won over $150.00 in prizes. We raised over $2000.00 for the lung association. We had only one angler who said he was from the OAF. The weather and the time of year may have worked against us and we are trying to figure out if it would be something to continue next year. Everyone in the event said the had a ball and was looking forward to being in it next year. And by the way all the anglers said the pretty much had the river to themselves all day, and no one was hogged out of a fishing spot that were not in the event. We were a little disappointed in the catch on the brown trout. But not surprised because of the numbers that were removed from the Blue Ribbon section during the hot weather.

The weather forecast for Saturday has a slight chance of showers with the high to be in the 70's. I have made a small change in the format of the 2 man teams part. I know some of the guy's attending is very familiar to the Upper Current River and some of the guy's from AR, & MO have never seen the river. I myself will do some transporting of the new guy's to sections of the river but I will not be guiding or fishing the event. I bet some of the other anglers would be glad to if not discuss sections with the new guy's lead them to the turn offs to the sections. As far as the kayak's and canoes as the say in the Army if you got em use em if you want. This is a day for fun and learning making new friends and helping out a great organization. I will have a map of the sections and will have a pre event question and answer for the new guest. The fishing has been good for the last week. The cool temps has the Brown trout moving around and feeding in the day light now. Last Saturday I caught 4 browns drifting a caddis pupa under a Chernobyl ant. Another thing we would like to get from this event is the number of brown trout in the trophy size is caught. With the caliber of anglers we should be able to get a glimpse of how the trophy water is doing or how bad it is. I know we lost a bunch of the bigger brownd during the hot weather last month to the park anglers.

Felt Soled Waders Banned In Mo Trout Waters!
Idylwilde replied to jdmidwest's topic in General Angling Discussion
You know I was reading through this thread and I had a thought to run through my ears. I remember not that many years ago the health Department come out with a new warning about a invasive disease that was invading the US. It took only one little germ of it to kill is. We were all warned to take precautions to prevent the spread of it. Some people thought only certain people could get it, some though it would not happen to them or the were safe because of their lifestyle. Some thought about it but ignored it all together. Some of them are dead or suffering from the disease. & some took the precaution and lived a happy life without worry. Very much like the warning for our rivers and streams now. Can you see the correlation between the two. Just saying! -

Don't know about the rod & reel but I do know how much trouble it would be around the house if I set Ice Tea on the table without a coaster and left water marks. LOL -
Felt Soled Waders Banned In Mo Trout Waters!
Idylwilde replied to jdmidwest's topic in General Angling Discussion
The DMC is working to get a solution for a fix you can do to the felt you have now and make them legal to wear. Look for it on their site in a few day's. (weeks) And if you need new boots look into the Korkers they have all the bases covered even the laces and boot itself. This is not going to be as we expect. Agents are not going to swarm the stream March 1st and issue tickets to everyone that has felt on. (I hope!!) Don't go trowing good boots away just yet, wait and see what the DMC comes out with. -

Felt Soled Waders Banned In Mo Trout Waters!
Idylwilde replied to jdmidwest's topic in General Angling Discussion
At this time only Trout waters are being the places the ban will be. Warm water is OK. More slick rocks in warm water anyway. And I understand the MDC has a quick and easy & cheap way to make the felt you now have legal it will be on the site in a few weeks. So don't panic and rush out and spent big bucks till all this settles down. -

I so agree with the safety issue most people over 50 do not like to slip and fall and chance a broken hip, even folks with bi-focal glasses have an issue during wading. But I am sure somebody will come up with an alternative sole for the boots as soon as more states do this and the money starts pouring in. -

Felt Soled Waders Banned In Mo Trout Waters!
Idylwilde replied to jdmidwest's topic in General Angling Discussion
Got to love the MDC way of thinking the set a day of Trout Opening as a new rule day. Now the way I see it all the folks that show up at trout opening will be breaking the law LOL Now the agents will be telling the guy's to come out of the water so they can inspect their waders and They are going to have to have a BUNCH of agents to check the 9000 anglers that show up at the trout Parks. Also all the tackle shops that have made their spring of 2012 orders will really be happy to have all them boots and waders on hand that are not going to sell. I go along with the ban but give the anglers and shops a break not on March 1st make a new rule. January is just a little better for the anglers but this is to late for the shops also they make orders in August for February orders to be shipped. -

May I ask where the ban on felt is written into law in the State Of MO? That is the violation code? What is the date it goes into effect? I can't seem to find it. -

The MDC had meeting at Montauk about three months ago and left all kinds of flyer's and survey form at the Fly shops and nobody seems to want to learn about it I know the shop has survey and info form the left on the counter and only two was filled out. And only a handful of anglers ask about it. First they need to find a way to get the anglers wanting to care about it so they will pay attention to it. I went to the meeting at montauk and their were only 5 people at it. They had a display and power-point program. -

You might want to look at the Korkers they have so many options to help is the control of stuff being carried from one location to another like, almost instant dry boot, no laces to gather up stuff, quick change soles so you can take them off and clean them with hot water & soap before your next outing, Two type of soles 1 felt 1 cleated in the box. Had a pair for a year and love them! -

The way I have it is The Concessionaires at the Three State Owned Trout Parks voluntarily decided to stop selling felt sole boots in the Park Concession stores. The were not ask to do so It was a voluntary thing. -
You can spin most hair it depends on what pattern you tying for the size. The smaller is easier to cut through with the thread under pressure of spinning.

The last time I fished there was about 5 years ago and the best tackle you could have used on was a weed whacker with a jerk bait attached. I hope that someone with a good idea will suggest a clean out of it while it's down. Most of the mud and dirt that is in it is sterile and will have to be built back up before it's good for anything but fill.
