  1. I've often had this discussion with fellow fisherman about which hook penetrates quicker. I've heard of some solid test data to show that heavier wire hooks actually do penetrate with less pressure than light wires, but since I wasn't actually involved in the test I can't say for sure. I usually put a light wire hook on my jigs because I'm fishing rivers for smallmouth and not flipping weed beds for Large mouth. I also prefer to straighten out the hook and pull it free from a snag with a light wire hook, saving the jig and all the time it took to tie/create the jig. Which kind of hook do you guys prefer for most of your fishing?
  2. Cutting military spending is very difficult to do correctly. Some of the programs take 10 years or more to come to fruition and just cutting them would be equivalent to throwing away all the work and hardware/manpower up to that point.
  3. I used to shoot the 3D archery range owned by McDonnell Douglas for their employees back in the eighties. We had a heck of a club back then and even had Fred Bear attend one event. For me the highlight of the events was having Darryl Pace, the Olympic champion archer, compete in the event with us. Since he was used to shooting at standard yardages, he wasn't used to having to guess the yardage and didn't compete well....however, he later was given the yardages with a laser range finder and I guarantee you couldn't put a quarter in between his arrow and the bulls eye on every shot after that. It was truly amazing. The good ole boys stopped snickering then.
  4. I can't see how being better educated could ever be a bad thing. I don't have much faith that a certain segment of the population will ever change their ways.
  5. You guys got me really thinking about this. I read up on this repellant and it looks pretty good. http://genesisreliefproducts.webs.com/bitingflyfacts.htm
  6. That's no joke!
  7. Nice fish Larry!
  8. I fished there once after you posted about it and got a ton of chiggers!
  9. Good for you, If we are bitter because we are trying to better the resource, I guess I'm guilty.
  10. I guess, like a good buzzbait, you go for the sqeak.

He he, they better not be talkin about my buddy, I'll woop em
  14. The second to last part of the process is actually being able to land the fish correctly. The last being a successful and quick release of a healthy fish. If you cant bring the fish to the boat you are only a half assed fisherman.

Have always found it odd that the MDC has a magazine called the "Conservationist" and in my opinion over- promotes catch and keep to a fault. That doesn't sound like conserving to me.
  17. Those big fish are just too smart. After thinking about it for a while, If I thought the fish was strictly attacking the lure for "get the heck out of my territory" reasons, I might have tried the special bomber long A, since the bigger profile might just tick him off.(forgive me for suggesting just really into it) But in reality I would have done the same thing you did. Please go back and get him!!!! I want to see the picture!!
  18. Think so, just look for the big rock next to the waterfall that has brown stuff all over it!
  19. Just read that Abu Garcia has a new reel called the Revo Rocket with a 9:1 gear ratio, pulls 37" per crank
  20. So do any of you losers, use Hellgrammites anymore? I've been debating about making a hellgrammite lure. I haven't seen any in a while, but people have told be they are as good as it gets for the streams.
  21. Sitting here in the Missouri Baptist emergency room with my 88 year old mother at 5:30 am. She's going to be ok, but when you're 88, even the smaller things can turn bad quickly. Gives me a little time to reflect on things including this forum, which occupies a small portion of my life. What a great resource this is for sharing information, stories, and sometimes random thoughts. Thanks Phil for creating and most of all maintaining this great resource. This has obviously grown big ( maybe bigger than you imagined) and I'm sure, because of the dynamics of technology, you've had to adapt and make some tough decisions. I appreciate the complexity of what it takes to be the moderator of such a forum, and I know you pretty much use a hands off approach, which I like. Thanks again
  22. Since I've lost my good curados in a canoe spill last year, I looked into replacing them with new curados, I just couldn't see the same quality/value ratio. Like Riverrat, I bought the Lew's and am very satisfied. Mine was the lower end Sh1Sh model with the 7:1 ratio. Was only $75 (I think) brand new from eBay. The drag and braking system are the best
  23. Wrong, It was in front of the gill plate
