New license requirements for taney

The building where I have my studio has another group that does this thing called "Grossbusters". It basically is a class where young kids come in and have a nice meal together among other things and learn proper manners and etiquette. You know - the things parents USED to teach their own kids. Anyway it is pretty cool - been on CNN etc - kind of a neat thing.

So reading the "rude people" thread got me thinking that we need to have something like that at taney. Since there are so many people there - in order to fish taney you should need a special license that you get by attending a special one day class to learn streamside manners. Think of it - a bunch of well behaved fisherpeople saying "excuse me" and "thanks", or "can I help you carry your gear back to the truck?" Or complimenting their comrades with "Those are really nice waders" and "great distance on your cast - were you that stunt caster in 'a river runs through it'??" See - THAT'S what we're talking about here.

So who decides who passes and who doesn't? Well I suppose MDC would have to be involved - although they probably wouldn't show up anyway - you know not enough money in the budget etc etc - So I figure we could do a lot worse than having Phil as one of the teachers - he's an upstanding kinda guy - does lots of work for us all and certainly knows the good and bad down there, and he already keeps most of us in line here.

So this thread can be where we make our suggestions of what topics we would like addressed in class, and of course maybe even suggest a few new rules and regulations. That way no one is only getting their views and wants enforced, but everyone has a voice. Maybe - just maybe a newbie to taney could glean a bit of wisdom from here - or a veteran could take pause to consider their actions - I know I have learned much by reading all the posts here. - Or maybe it's all just fun.

So I will start off with my subject request - hard to limit it to just one, but mine encompasses a lot of things.

1. Personal Space. When fishing be aware of what is happening in your personal space and try not to let things in your space affect everyone else on the river. So this could include wading loudly within a few feet of someone else, blasting your radio, smoking cigars within other peoples range. Most of the posts I see here with people complaining about fellow fishermen fall into the personal space category - The bottom line is this - most of us want to feel like we are on an isolated stretch of the Yellowstone even if we are amongst 50 other people. Some of this may cause personal sacrifice, but if we all think of others first and how what we do affects them as the good book says, it will help.

end of first period -

I see what you mean. Before we head out to fish my buddies and I practice good manners. For instance we were staying at Lilley's and when my buddy Steve was ready, he asked me "Do these waders make my butt look big?". I said "no Steve you look great in them". Our day went better than ever and I could tell Steve felt good about his figure and he had a better attitude because of it.

Snagged.

Snagged - I'm NOT touching that!!

Coincidentally, Jeremy Hunt wants to do a fishing clinic on a Saturday up at the dam. I don't think he's worked out all the details but what we've talked about so far is - free - limit to 10 people - basic fishing instruction from equipment, clothing, equiette, casting, reading water...

I guess we could create a official looking card, personalize it and present it if they pass the OAF test.

As far as keeping you all in line... I've only had to bump one user- and I didn't have to bump this user, he requested to be bumped- that's pretty good seeing we have almost 500 members now.

well, for the most part, fishermen are honest (well, when it really matters :D ), respectful people. the few that aren't probably wouldn't take the time to go on the internet to talk to people they don't already know. truth be told, they probably don't really care about conservation, manners, or any other issue associated with catching fish.

My suggestion:

Big Old honking signs at each river access touting in effect the illegality's of shuffling. And that at anytime an MDC agent may be watching and you are subject to being fined. Sometimes just the "threat" is as good as it actually happening. Course MDC would have to check in every once in a while to carry through.

"smoking cigars within other peoples range"

Define personal space when I want to smoke a cigar? If I want to smoke a cigar when I am on the water I will. If the person 25 yards downwind from me doesnt like it. HE can move.

I am all for acting like a gentleman when I am on the river. I even give complete strangers my flies, tippet, advice, etc. But dangit, if I want to smoke in wide open public spaces I will. And to be honest, the only time I wont smoke is if the person I am fishing with asks me not to.

my .02 cents

You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.

Ya know tippet, I make my living as a professional guitarist, and I could bring a wall of amps down to the river that would be so loud that it would literally peel the skin off your forehead as you were trying to fish. But I don't do it - just because that would be subjecting you to something I was doing that you probably wouldn't want during your fishing experience, and to me.... that's just rude. That's the point. But we won't all be courteous and so it goes. It's that whole - "I'll do what I want and when I want and I don't care what anyone says" that seems to me to be the trouble with things, but like I mentioned above - everyone will go their own path.

But where does it end? Thats the point I am trying to make.

Because that guy over there is wearing a yellow hat, yellow scares me.

Oh look, that guy is using a Orvis rod, I dont like Orvis.

I dont like cigarette smoke, but I have never asked anyone to put out a cig. just because I dont like it. I move.

Why should I infringe upon someone elses likes, because I dont like what they are wearing, smoking, eating, etc. It is a public area.

You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.

I know tippet is not gonna blow smoke in your face. He is talking about giving everyone their space. We do that in everyday conversation and meeting on the street. Everyone has their own comfort zone. I challenge anyone to smell a cigar 25 yards downrange outside anywhere.
