Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 14, 2008 Root Admin Share Posted April 14, 2008 Word is they are going to close ALL the flood gates tomorrow (Monday) and hold Table Rock as close to 930 as possible, just like they did with Beaver Lake. I think the idea is to hold as much back as possible in all the lakes so the White has time to settle downstream. But the next rain we get, they will open them back up. Of course they will run 4 units full, 24 hours a day. This seems almost impossible to me- seeing they ran 5 gates for so long but it does make sense. Don't hold me to it... wait and see. But that's the word.
Don Allenbaugh
The corps has a plan that they are following. They made the plan back in 92. They have never experienced what is happening now (there reason for what they are doing). Having said that I think there plan is that they have no plan. It is totally unbelievabe to me that they are not using a little common sense in their releases. Bull Shoals has 17 flood gates open 4 inches (5600 cfs) and the lake is up to 594.81 (top of flood pool is 595)and still rising. Instead of releasing, lets say 10000 cfs instead of 5000, there would still be less flooding than what is perhaps to come if they wait until it is to high and then release 30-60,000 cfs flooding more people that haven't been flooded as of yet. I would think they had learned their lesson at Beaver, Table Rock, and Norfork by waiting so long. The corps says that they are using Newport as their point for regulation. I really don't think that the thousands of people that have been flooded by the corps actions over the last week or so could care less if the farm fields at Newport area have 5 inches of water on them or 5 feet on them. Sorry for the tirade I am just venting. Don A
snagged in outlet 3
I've been wondering why the Corp puts such emphasis on saving farm fields while flooding homes. I work in the disaster mitigation and recovery field and their actions just don't make sense to me. Plan for the worse and hope for the best is what we hear all the time. Sounds like the corp has it backward. SIO3
Thom
The corporate farm lobby is powerful in it's influence. I don't think the small farmers are what the corps is interested in. I guess I may be a little niave in thinking that the corps really can be influenced by anyone, but that is what I have read in other sources. Members AKflyfisher
I dont think its just about the White river, I was watching the weather channel and the Mississippi in Louisiana is near record flood stages. If the White and Little Red opened up their gates the lower White which is already flooded will flood more but so will the Mississippi, the Ouachita river sistem also has alot of water to get rid off along with the Arkansas their are alot of other systems that are blown out also. Soo you have to look of the big picture not just the White River picture
Snow Fly
I bet there also will be a big snow melt coming down from the north into the Mississippi river which is already high. Know they have some big snow packs in Wy. and some other western states, just don't know how much of that water will come down the Missouri river. Members FliTrap4
I bet there also will be a big snow melt coming down from the north into the Mississippi river...... Record snows were recorded in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota! Adding greatly to the Mississippi River when it all melts! Its on the way, shortly! Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 15, 2008 Author Root Admin Share Posted April 15, 2008 Well they didn't shut the gates down but the water has dropped. It's almost down to pre-monsoon levels. HOpefully by tomorrow they'll be able to get on our dock without having to wear boots. Left several inches of slimy mud on our road.
crappiefisherman
I also have noticed all the sediment.I wonder if upper Taney como is clean as a whistle now?Im sure lots of it came from feeder streams that were very muddy(construction, areas of excavation), I have never expierienced this up close before, and now working on the lakefront I guess I just see it more clearly.
