Upgrade Question

Since I am from Kansas I don't get over to the Rock very much so I read about it alot. I must say with all honesty that when I found this forum I was totally, and I do mean totally, blown away. Nice site! Thanks for all the priceless info.

Since I started reading this forum and trying to apply it on the water, ( on the Rock or not ) my catch rate has gratefully improved.

My question is this: I am at Table Rock and I have been fishing grubs and split shot rigs as suggested for the current conditions we have now . As a result I have methodically located plenty of fish from several different points and have been catching them good. Now I decide I would like to catch a fish or two from the next larger size class, say 4# to 6# fish. What do I do ?

1) Fine tune the current approach?

2) Start over with a completely different approach?

3) Other

All suggestions are appreciated and the question arises from wondering if you guys ever get tired of catching 2.5 lb to 3.5lb bass. I've never personally caught more than 5 or 6 bass on any one outing but I do remember in my younger days catching whites in large numbers and becoming somewwhat bored.

(PS) I'm just a tad bit jealous if you can't tell.

To increase your odds of catching a larger fish you will need to target largemouth. While Table Rock has a significant population of Smallmouth and Kentucky over the 4lb. mark, you can consider yoursef lucky to catch one a trip & 6 pound fish are fish of a lifetime. This is why most tournaments on TR are won on Largemouth, not smallies or KY's. To target largemouth prepare yourself for fewer bites in shallow water. Head up one of the dirtier tributaries (James, Kings or Long Creek) focus on shallow wood cover and alternate pitching a jig and a weightless senko (rigged straight or wacky). The bite will not be as strong but you will catch several fish and your odds of catching a 4# - 6# class fish is are greatly improved. Oh, and to answer your question, no I NEVER GET TIRED of catching 2.5# - 3.5# fish.

I know you were hoping for an answer from some of the local guides and pros, but I don't think there is an answer. Are they flowing water or not? Is the water temp cooling or warming. Sun rising or setting? Wind direction? Wind speed?

If I find a pattern and am looking for bigger fish, then I try to fine tune it. Sometimes that means moving farther out on the point, farther in, or up river or toward the dam. If you hang on I bet someone smart will try to answer your inquiry.

Eric, that is one of the best answers I have ever seen on this forum. Another way to upgrade, is to throw the shoe, but you can get a big zero on that. We tried it yesterday and it wore is both to the ground.

For those of you that have know idea what the Shoe is, you will have to do your research. Check California and Texas Bass Fishing for the Answer.

I love a mystery! But I searched quite a few TX and CA forums myself........with no luck. I would guess a big deep diving crankbait?

my guess would be a deep diving crankbait like a Manns 20 +. They can wear you out in a hurry, and they do catch big fish I know!

Google is probably being swamped with "shoe, bass fishing, California" serches now. I finally found one reference and it wasn't what I thought which was fishing on the anchor as opposed to using the trolling motor.
