Whack'emGood Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I'm like Bill... I would take my boat out and put it in the garage. If you leave anything out and within reach of a thief... like my grandpa always used to say... "No matter what you do to deter them... (locks, lights, cameras, alarms, etc.) if they really want it, they will get it anyway." Its a bad deal, but its a fact. "Success builds confidence, and you have to learn to trust your instincts and forget about fishing the way a tournament is supposed to be won. I'm going to fish my style and make it work for me." -KEVIN VANDAM "Confidence is the best lure in your tackle box." -GERALD SWINDLE "A-Rig? Thanks, but no thanks. If I can't catch them on the conventional tackle that I already use, then I guess I just can't catch them." -LK (WHACK'EM)
bigredbirdfan Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 The real problem is that they teach their kids it's ok to take something from someone that has worked really hard for it . So the theives multiply at exponential rates. Good thing the little Johnnys aren't getting a paddling in school when they get caught stealing pencils and candy. Theives are the worst scum in the world. Worse then the bottom of the dock.
Bill Babler Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 This is just a bit of a related issue, on taking the law into your own hands. A good friend of mine with a somewhat quick temper had an issue with a neighbor, over his son's motor cycle. The story goes like this. My buddy had seen the neighbor kid down at the barn where the little dirt bike was housed. A couple of days later he was down there, and the bike was missing. He immediatly called his son out and said, " Where is your dirt bike'? The son said in the barn, lying thru his teeth. My buddy called the neighbor and ask for his kid to return the bike. Of course the neighbor's kid really didn't know where it was or anything about this. My friend insenced stalked over and got into a terrible fight with his neighbor. The neighbor's arm was broken in the brawl. The bike however did not show up. After much crying and whining, and the sherriff brought into play, my friends son admitted he sank it in the pond. He had seen a TV show of guys biking across water from one side to the other and had tried it. ie, bike in the middle of the pond. The ordeal is finaly over. $60,000 is what Ben ended up paying for taking the law into his own hands and assulting the neighbor. There were also criminal charges. You want to shoot someone? Beat them up? Electricute them? Make a mistake like Ben did, and your life as you know it is over. In this day of video camera and recorders, if you do anything to anyone, you are in for the trouble of a lifetime. Gather information, if you can and let the authorities handle it. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Leonard Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 a security system is less then you really think... http://www.gadspot.com/product_info.php?&products_id=119 they even make systems that have a weblink, the computer starts beeping when the camera has pick up something.. only problem with that is all the boat going by setting it off.... http://www.taneycomonights.com
Crappie5 Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 A game camera has a flash to take night pictures. This flash would just lead the bad guys to know where the camera is and just steal it too.
mosouthpaw Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 A game camera has a flash to take night pictures. This flash would just lead the bad guys to know where the camera is and just steal it too. not the IR cameras. No flash no idea..... then a nice B&W image to show them in the act. such as this camera http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s...0002000_400-2-4 or this http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s...0002000_400-2-4 IR cameras are really an affordable security system, they are good around equipment and if youre buidling a house. easily hidden and the flash wont give you away and you can photo the scumbags in action or even video them.
snakem Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 What if this is this gentlemen's houseboat or cabin cruiser he sleeps in can he defend himself then? I Liked the idea of filling there boat full of holes Maybe then hold them at gun point, call the LAW and let them handle it ? WE do pay TAXES BUT dont take a life over chump change even though that changh is getting expnsive. If you do, plan on going to jail for a long time,no more fishing no more freedom no more fun. Snakem OUT.
jdmidwest Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Fill your tank with water or diesel and let them steal that. Might find a boat floating around later in the lake that won't start. No amount of gas is worth a human life. The decision to take another life should never be taken lightly, and should only be done if your life or someone elses life is in danger. Probably a bunch of kids with nothing better to do in the summer. Make sure you keep your kids busy with jobs, chores, or sports. Where are your kids tonight anyway? Around here they steal from farm equipment. Fuel and anhydrous amonia for the meth. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
skeeter Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 Fellas, as, always, thanks for all the replies and good ideas. Like I said, the entire neighborhood is up in arms over this ( literally ) and no one is going to back down, we are fed up to the eye brows. It is an intrinsic, God given right to defend one's self and property. There are enough Nam vets here that did tours with firing restrictions to know when and where not to let go. You want to catch them with the portable tanks they are taking in their boat or their siphon hose stuck in your filler neck. The suggestion made about locking fillers was on the money and PERKO does make some but they are not unversal fit by far. This entire problem will only become worse as fuel climbs in price ever further. If you sit back passively and take no action this problem will only continue. I posted about night fisherman being wary around public Marinas because owners are blaming night tournaments !!!! They have no basis for that but that is what they are telling people complaining. Gasoline on the water hit $4.75 yesterday with the latest delivery. Honest fishermen have no worries but I would not be pulling up to the stern of any moored boats and laying hands on them if I were you. This may draw some unwanted attention.
taxidermist Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 The threat must be directed at a specific person, a general threat is just that general. As for security, you can get a infrared camera really cheap these days. I have a system that shows everything works for up to 24 hours without electricity and send info directly yo my home computer. I have five other cameras. Along with that it has VOX recording for voice. So I heare who is talking in and around the shop and have pics of who stops to look in. Some of the cameras are not much larger than a silver dollar. I spent about $400.00 on the system. One camera is located so I can see license plates, the others so I see everyone. I dont know who lethal a fence charger would be when mixed with water, since most are pulse, but they could be lethal too. I have never seen any reason to fish around docks, theres a whole lake out there and fishing around a dock is just the lazy mans way. The dock and what cover has been placed around it is not mine, not did I put the cover there so why would I steal someones hard work? When I was a kid we has a boat house up in Bear Creek on Bull Shoals and always some idiot would break into it. finally my folkd destroyed it because they were tired of the repair and people fishing from it all the time. Less hassle. My advice is if the dock is not yours dont fish around it.
