taxidermist Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I have some friends who decided at the last minute to take a father son trip to Alaska to fish. He has had some heart probems stint etc. and works everyday hard. But as many of us know tomorrow is only a promise and they decided maybe this would be their trip of a lifetime. Anyone have any idea on fishing trip without spending huge sums of money? Thanks JOhn
techo Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 It depends on the fishing. There is some good fishing north of Anchorage, Sheeps Creek, Montana and LIttle Willow. Mostly fly fishing and depends on when the runs are. The Little Willow usually has grayling. Ozark Mountain Sports is a great place to checkin when you go. I think it is at the corner of Old Seward and 36th Avenue. Might be good to give them a call and they wll set you up with some ideas and some flies if you need them. CHeap lodging as ypu can camp almost anywhere. Bears can be pesty though Salt Water Safaris will do a great combo trip for halibut andsilvers out of Seward. Great guides and usually runs about 250.00 I think. Tim Carpenter

Clay Goforth Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I just got back from a place called the Togiak River Lodge on the Togiak River west of Dillingham and Anchorage. The cost is a little pricey because of the flights to get there but with gas the way it is, your flights anywhere in Alaska are not going to be cheap. If you book for the middle of August you should be in the heart of the Silver Salmon run. The River is not very long and this particular lodge is the only lodge with actual physical structure cabins. There is only one other "camp" to speak of and it is a ways up river. Great place for secluded fishing, lots of fish, great food, nice cabins, and an overall excellent trip. If you would like some more info on the camp you can contact Steve's Outdoor Adventures at www.stevesoutdooradventures.com Their contact info is on the page and you can call and ask for Jeff or Steve. Gavin Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 A lodge were you fly out every day costs big bucks, A camp with boats on a good river costs less. You can also do it on your own. Fly to Anchorage, rent a car, drive down to the Kenai P. Good dolly & rainbow fishing in the Cooper Landing area, salmon too. You will need a guide to float the Kenai, but you can wade the Russian, Quartz Creek and some of the streams over by Soldatna. Halibut Charters are Available in Soldatna, Homer, & Seward. If you can hire a guide & pilot for a couple day trips across Cook Inlet, do it... A couple years ago we flew out of Soldatna and fished the Kustatan and Big River Lakes. Hoped to make it to the Chuit, but we couldnt land due to fog. The Fishing on the other side of Cook Inlet was incredible, saw bears, and wolves. Been to AK several times times and the fishing and scenery on the Kenai P. is just as good as anyplace else in AK..just more people. Good luck.
jdmidwest Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 You might want to try Gwins in Coopers Landing, they have it all, lodging, guide service, restaurant. Its close to Anchorage, fairly reasonable, next to Kenai River and Russian River. A float for Rainbows in late August on the Kenai is priceless. Salmon are pretty much done for this year, Kings are closed, Reds are peaking now, Silvers will be in late August. Booking a trip this late in the year is tough. You would be better off starting 6 months in advance for best rates and availability. Do a little research and try for next year or check out Lilley's lodge and see if they have openings. He runs this website and guides on the Naknek River over by King Salmon. Bill Babler Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I'll give you two trips. First is a late summer, Mid-August trip to Kodiak, to do it yourself fish the road system. It is marvelious. Chums and Pinks on every cast in the Olds, Russian Chiniak, Pasagak, and American and other river that cross the 110 mile road system. Throw in two days of Halibut, Ling Cod, Sea Bass and King Salmon on a Charter and you have a whale of a vacation that can be booked for about as low a price as you can ever hope for. I'm talking under $2000.00 for everything including your flights, lodging, fishing and meals. This is true Alaska, and not an Anchorage area trip, this is Kodiak. Better yet, even with the fire is Naknek River Camp. King Salmon Alaska There may be openings for September Rainbows and Arctic Char. Massive Fish on Big Water with probably the finest people to ever host an Alaska Trip. With Air Fare, about $3,500 for the kit-en-kbotle. Send me a personal message on either of the trips and I will give you more info. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
bigredbirdfan Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Bill: Were those dollar amounts per person or for the pair?
Bill Babler Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Of Course that is per person. Flights to Kodiak round trip from St. Louis are running $850.00 and flights to King Salmon are costing in the $1,100 per ticket range. Very reasonable. A similar trip to Branson with 5 days of guided fishing and a Top Flight Lodge stay, meals and just area fuel getting from your location and running around here for a week, is going to come out about $1,800 to $2,400 per person. This makes Alaska very reasonable if you do the Kodiak trip or you go to Naknek River Camp. I know that had some cancellations at Naknek for August and Early September, and they might have available Space. The majority of the Lodges at King Salmon, or most on Bristol Bay, are running about a Grand per day per person, and they are full all Summer, and booking a year in advance. That makes the two I have given you a real value. When I was guiding in Alaska full time in the Late 90's we were charging $3,700 per person per week, and were full. This is not counting airfare. Great deals on Kodiak or thru the NNRC, at King Salmon http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
