Except maybe if the fish couldn't be revived... If the fish is going to die anyway, you might as well keep it.

I agree. I have had my share of 13 inchers that tried to go belly up on me as well. That is the nature of the sport that we all accept when we go trout fishing.

Very nice brown. That's a catch of a lifetime!

It's sad to see that it was killed but even if they released it, the outcome due to the low oxygen levels and what not would have all caused the same outcome to the life of that great fish. Atleast since he kept it, he got to show it off to a lot of people who probably never knew a trout got that big.

I'd say that fish lived a long a fruitful life anyways just to make it to that size.

Congrats to the luckiest fisherman on Taneycomo!

Heck of a fish, be it on a fly or on powerbait

Lets not forget that fishing began as a blood sport, and in many ways, it still is, despite whatever our modern take on the sport is. I think that taking a fish or two every now and then keeps things in perspective, and is not neccesarily as "evil" as we sometimes see it.

Maybe the fish swallowed the hook on the powerbait. Maybe no camera in the boat and he wanted a picture. Maybe he tried returning it to the water and it went belly up. Maybe he decieded this fish is going on the wall, that would be his choice. Let this guy have his 15 minutes of fame.

Wow what a nice fish. I also think that it is a waste to mount this fish given the fake reproductions you could hang on the wall. It is such a shame people insist on having quality fish mounted. That fish, and many others caught each year, would make two great fillets. I mean come on smoked trout is awesome. Although I do prefer the huge native cutthroat that are found in the high lakes and rivers of Colorado. No matter what you did with this fish, it is yours to do with as you please. Thank you to all the Veterans that have made that possible!

I don't see the big deal with this guy keeping the fish. Chances are the fish was going to die anyway. People shouldn't get that upset with someone having to keep a fish of this size. If you were in the woods and saw a monster buck during rifle season would you just take a pic and make a replica of it or would you shoot the thing. My guess is you probably would shoot it. It is just part of being a hunter or fisherman. People should not make a huge deal of him keeping the fish.
