MoCarp Posted June 7, 2006 Posted June 7, 2006 My buddy has a pond full of grass carp he wants to get rid of... so if i cut up cucumbers and or cherry tomatoes they will bite?? Should i fish on the bottom ??? His pond is like 12 foot deep at the deepest. Thanks for any info lots of ways, always start with sweet corn that usally works--you say his pond is full of grass carp aka white amur? they do not breed in still water , they need current much like a striper or spoon bill to reproduce, if the pond gets weed problems then removing ALL the fish will bring back weeds, if the fish get big then probably not too many grass carp, does his other fish do well? its all about balence--as a rule the 500 sunfish/100 largemouth bass per acre is the start of a healthy pond--to carry more fish per acre you need diversity in species--instead of JUST bluegills/bass a 350/100/50 bluegill / red ear/warmouth/ ratio/ is a good combo, crappie can over take a lake with a poor predator population--but if you, do put in BLACK CRAPPIE-/50 per acre, they seem to be better adapted to pond life the white crappie, grass carp are needed in some ponds but in low numbers 2-3 per acre--but will not eat filementatous "sp?" alga which common carp do.... best usally isralie mirror carp just put them in under 10 per acre--as a carp control flat head cats do a great job but do poor in ponds under 3 acres--but they love eating carp and a big flat can and does eat carp up to 5-6 pounds so 1 or 2 big flats are plenty MONKEYS? what monkeys?
Members Carpaholic Posted June 8, 2006 Members Posted June 8, 2006 Thanks for the info... My buddy nor I know what the breed of the grass carp are i know the pond is 50 years old so hard telling when they were put in there i figured they had to be reproducing though cause the pond which is about an acre and a half is full of them i've seen 12-14 grouped together on top of the water and they are darker in color than the common carp. There are bass in it but small i figured their growth was stunted. I haven't fished for catfish yet so i'm not sure i did fish with worms in their once and never got a bite i caught the small bass on plastics.
Members Carpaholic Posted June 14, 2006 Members Posted June 14, 2006 Ok i screwed that up i got some better looks at the carp and they are common carp not grass carp I tried corn yesterday no luck worms didn't work either. A guy i work with told me of a doughbait that consists of wheaties banana 1 egg and wheat germ..... anyone heard of that????
MoCarp Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 where you at? might help you a bit MONKEYS? what monkeys?

snagged in outlet 3 Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 Hey Carpaholic. Check my story in the "Carp are starting to bite well" thread. I live in St. Charles in West St. Louis County and have been carping for a few years. When I see them suspeneded on top those fish usually won't bite. Try early or late in the day. I've always had my best luck in the evening because that's when I go. Give the corn another try. You don't mention if you chum first. Throw out the contents of a couple cans in the morning, or the day before, then go back in the evening and throw a little more out and fish. I use a big gulp cup to sling it out far enough. Best hooks are scud hooks, they don't pull out without hooking them and always gets them in the corner of the mouth. I use a quarter oz. bullet weight above a swivel with a 3X leader about 3 feet long and leave planty of slack in the line. When the fish picks up the bait the line slides through the weight and the fish doesn't feel it. You don't need to set the hook just come tight on them. If these fish haven't been chased you'll get them. I think the key is; chum them up, wait, then chum and fish. Good luck. Snagged
jim m Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 hey snagged and carpaholic, there are a group of avid carpers that live in your area, if interested shoot me a pm and I can put you in contact with some of them. Jim
snagged in outlet 3 Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 Hey Jim. I got your PM's but I've been busy. Trout fishing in AR and bass fishing locally. I don't really chase them that much, just when I can't get away to trout fish. I haven't even been this year but I usually wait until it's so hot nothing else is active. It's getting that way now. I'll have to drive up and check my spots to see what's up. I don't really need help catching them since my honey holes are just filled with them. Maybe your friends could start posting here about there adventures? I may give it a go this weekend. I'll report if I do. Snagged
