jdmidwest Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Walmart greeter stomped to death by early morning herd of shoppers looking for one of five cheap TV's, computers, or GPS's. What a way to die, the most tragic way to die, killed by greed. What is the world coming too? The last few years, Black Friday has gotten way out of hand at several retailers. Just 2 years ago, a lady stole a laptop out of an older man's cart locally because of the limited supply. Fights have broken out at stores. Its not just Wally, others are guilty too. If you want to put something on sale, keep enough on hand to satisfy the mob or don't do it at all. Walmart worker killed by early morning shoppers. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 29, 2008 Root Admin Posted November 29, 2008 We were talking about this at the dinner table. Imagine this- our financial system collapses and food becomes hard to get in the cities. Even the notion that food may get scarce, it will bring these same people and MORE to the super markets. It could happen.

Otherwise, this will continue to happen.

strangercreek Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 These grown adults that show up for the early store "door busters" are really sad. I understand the first come first served thing, but it seems like they do it (keep only a few of the actual items) to create the frenzy and get the excited crowd to the door. I think it is pathetic. I have heard stories of fist fights, people getting arrested, etc. I wouldn't know because I don't go ANYWHERE near a retail establishment on black friday. I usually go fishing or sit home and tie flies. If this kind of thing did happen with food, I guess we'll have to hope we can catch a fish or shoot something...
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 30, 2008 Root Admin Posted November 30, 2008 Saw on Fox where a talking head said WalMart should be held responsible that they didn't handle it well. They also said the legislators should pass new laws to keep something like this from happening again. I just laughed... that about all legislators do any more... pass more laws to TRY to people to act NOT like animals- but mainly they do it to cover their own butts.
strangercreek Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Even worse, people were raising hell after they were told the store would close due to the death. They were upset because they had been in line over night and just kept shopping. Other employees were also inured trying to help the 34 year old man that was trampled to death. This is why I don't like crowds. People do act like animals, especially in big metro areas. Someone had to die just because a few self centered, greedy, overindulgent jerks wanted to save a few bucks on an LCD idiot box.
jdmidwest Posted December 1, 2008 Author Posted December 1, 2008 As much as I would like to see Wally crucified, as they are a thorn in society's side and have really hurt small town retailers, there are several other retailers that pulled the same crap and something really should be done about it. A massive lawsuit against Wally would set a precedence like the hot coffee incident with McDonalds and may put an end to the madness. Sales are one thing, limited supplies that cause a fight are another. I went out Friday and shopped after the morning duck hunt. I went to Staples for some electronics they had in an ad. The place was not crowded, they had the 3 items in stock I wanted, I was happy and done for the day. Did I mention I went in at 11:30 am. not 5:00 am.? I spoke with the cashier about the days business. She stated that they opened 15 minutes early because the crowd was getting rowdy and she had heard several complaints about Wally and Best Buy and their sales. I almost bought a 19" LCD monitor that they had for $99, still had a whole pallet left, $100 less than normal price. The guy that died in NY at Wally was in a store that featured a cheap vacuum cleaner, cheap digital camera, cheap plasma TV, and The Incredible Hulk DVD for $9. Not quite worth a human life. Had it been a stupid shopper that was stupid enough to wait outside for hours for a chance at the above cheap worthless crap, then the death would have been a little more acceptable because they had a death wish anyway.
