patfish Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Took the 30+ mile drive to Cabelas in Hazelwood this afternoon because I had to return something and to ask the fly shop guys about a broken reel foot that I need to replace(yes, still). I was amazed, after a short wait in the return line, I browsed my way over to the fly fishing gear. Walked over and placed my reel on the counter. Looked around, no one. Oh well, I figure maybe there's only one guy in the shop today and he's probably helping someone else right now. No big deal. So like the 12 year old 38 year old that I am, I just start picking up everything and playing with it. 10-15 minutes go by, a guy comes up and asks me if anyone is working in the fly shop, I tell him I haven't seen anyone. About 5 minutes later an employee walks up with an armful of items to be re-stocked. I ask him if anyone is working in the fly shop. He tells me that the 2 guys that are supposed to be - aren't in today. Huh? Supposed to be? Aren't in today? What the? Now, I have never had ANY problems with Cabelas, ever. But, when the girlfriend finishes shopping at <cringe> Bed, Bath and Beyond before I ever get to speak with anyone that works at a fishing store, something is seriously wrong. I hate to sound like I'm trashing them, but that was just not right. If they're not selling any more fly fishing stuff, they should have told someone. Kind of sad, because I really like the place. If I was running that store there would be 2 job openings in the fly shop at the Hazelwood Cabelas - right now.
Thom Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I had kind of the same experience there also. I browsed and everything I priced was overpriced and not stocked well. I don't plan on going back there. I like the Bass pro better in St. Clharles however the last two times I shopped there they were out of tungsten beads and the 1/80 and 1/100 mini jig heads that I had come for. Thom Harvengt
jdmidwest Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Its hard to beat T Hargrove or Feather Craft if you are in the city. Both have good stock, great experienced help, and good prices. And they always man their booths. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

I don't think I've ever been able to walk in either one of them with out being greeted and asked if I can be helped immediately A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! ekl-stl Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I went to Cabelas on Wednesday night last week and was greeted and assisted by an employee (middle 50's) for the 30 minutes that I shopped. They are re-setting the fly shop with a different layout and new items, so it may have looked a little thin.. Not sure about your experience but sometimes staffing issues pop up..
Gavin Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Its a nice store for crankbaits and camping gear, but I dont buy any fly tackle there. Same applies to BPS. Its really hard to top Hargrove's or Feather-craft if you want service and selection. Cheers.

I can never get out for less than $ 100 . Great selection and very seldom out of stock on the items I need. Thom Thom Harvengt
patfish Posted January 26, 2009 Author Posted January 26, 2009 Well, since JD and Thom agreed on something, anything, I will hereby delcare my less than stellar experience at Cabelas a complete success. Congrats fellas!!!
jdmidwest Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Its a tuff crowd around here......... I'm lucky its a 2 hour drive for me so I only get there 2 times a year, I save money that way. But I make stops at both of them and spend the most time shooting the bull with Tom. Orvis opened a Company store near them years ago and I will have to say it was the rudest place I had been to. The manager was always complaining about something. Being a part of the Orvis Family with my affiliation with a couple of dealers and having worked for a shop, I had to share my experiences with the higher ups. I guess others had the same problems and now they are gone. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
patfish Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 JD, I was just messin with you and Thom. No disrespect intended. Just funnin'. I really appreciate the input from y'all. Oh, yeah, that "Orvis store", its a real treat. Blech! I concur.
