We paid our kids a penny each for every cig butt they picked up here at the resort when they were kids... helped them with two vices... not to smoke and not to litter.

It worked.

I was sent a zippo case type of ashtray from Winston years ago. That I keep in my vest pocket. Normally use that big pocket on the back for larger pieces found between spots. Have recently taken to bringing the pipe to the water more often rather than just by the campfire.

Zack Smith made a comment about butts putting toxins in the water.I'm sure they add some. A few years back, another concern was fly floatant liquids. Seems the main ingredients were acetone and collodion. DuckyDoty had the right idea, don't do it and pick up after the ones who do.

Fishpond came out with a great idea not to long ago... theyre selling these little canisters that hook up to your chest pack or whatever and are made for disposing of trash. On the website they say they're selling them in sets of 4 for $13. Its a heck of an idea, Im not sure its worth $13 but it shows some great initiative. Ran across a good idea on another site (I think it was faol but can't remember for certain) where a smoker took an empty 35mm film container and cut an X thru the lid. He then pushed the butt thru the x and into the cannister. When he is done fishin he can throw the entire cannister away or empty it and re-use it.

Imagine the difference it would make if everyone did something like this and picked up at least one piece of trash each time they went out...

Nothing to add, just thought that was worth repeating!

I agree, I am just trying to envision how large of a container I would have to have for an 8 hour fishing trip... I don't think a 35mm film canister would cover it.. Besides, where do you find 35mm film canisters anymore?

Besides, The bottom of my boat is filled with other peoples trash every time I hit the river... I am on the look out for a gigging pole, even though I don't even intend to Gig with it really...

I will say this: The outfitters on the niangua were having trouble with trash being dumped in the river. They attempted to combat this problem a few years ago by starting a campaign to give every floater a Red net style bag to put their trash in..

Now the #1 thing that I pick out of the river (besides drunk floaters) is Red, net style trash bags
