I'm not us are how many of us aware of this new legislation but congress is in the process of passing a bill that would legalize the carrying of loaded firearms in our National Parks. Not sure on this one....... If you get a chance today, look up the article Guns-in-park measure OK'd in the Tulsa World. It should be on their website today. Let me know what you think.

The National parks have some pretty tough gun policies...No target shooting, unloaded unless you are actively hunting in those National Parks where hunting is allowed. I've done a bit of back country hiking in bear country, and I can see a need to loosen the restrictions a bit. A home defense shotgun and some 00 buck shot just might come in handy out there... Just because folks can carry, doesnt mean that many people will carry, plus I'm sure that the Feds will impose some severe penalties on anyone who uses a weapon improperly. Cheers.

The rules for this were already changed following proper channels to allow conformity to state laws in which the national park is located, but a certain "Scaredy Bunch" got a bad(activist) judge to put a block on it on the basis of "environmental impact." The misuse of environmental law buy a group of liars is much worse than anything done here. IMHO

It also showed that gun rights are not a bi-partisan issue anymore after reviewing the over whelming support from both sides of the isles on this one. In the senate there was a vote for each part of the bill separately. Then put em back together for executive passage.

Sort of a moot point if there is a "lead ban".

You are braver than I to protect yourself from bears with 00 buck! Heard of a a friend in Alaska who killed one with a 45 pistol as it charged.

Doesn't this just apply to those licensed for concealed carry?

I think this applies to anyone with a loaded gun, concealed or not.

I am in favor of being allowed to have a weapon in a national park, but let's be realistic - the chances of needing one to fend off a bear is is highly unlikely, except possibly in Alaska. Most of us who backpack and canoe in wilderness areas consider ourselves lucky if we ever SEE a bear.

I support the individual decision to carry one, but I personally would not, considering that I spend lots of money to buy very light gear, and I wouldn't add to my load a 5 lb item that would never be used.

As a safety item, a gun would be more useful on Missouri streams, conservation areas, and national forests, but not for protection against bears.

This law will not go into effect untill Feb 2010 because it was attached to the credit card law which does not take effect untill then. They are already proposing amendments to reverse this law that will be attached to other proposed laws in the near future inorder to reverse the new gun law in National Parks.
