Doesn't this just apply to those licensed for concealed carry?

This just puts a states laws pertaining to firearms into effect in parks that reside inside of the state. Freer the state safer its citizens same as always.

This law will not go into effect untill Feb 2010 because it was attached to the credit card law which does not take effect untill then. They are already proposing amendments to reverse this law that will be attached to other proposed laws in the near future inorder to reverse the new gun law in National Parks.

Yes they maybe but I wouldn't suggest getting cast in the light as anti guns as a public official. For the most part this will get money put in your opponents coffers. And a serious question of ones ability to make sound rational decisions. IMHO

Gun laws and restrictions only effects the law abiding!

I like to be able to make my own decision about what I need or want, so I think this is a good thing.

Also, I agree that I wouldn't want to pack around some 5-pound thing I may not need either, so I'd probably pack this:

26 oz S@W 329PD

And this:

Bear Spray

And this, too.

Streamlight

Boy Scout motto..... you know.

Duane would be weighing in on this one if he were within internet access right now...

We talked about this before he left for AK. Duane would carry if he could. For me, I'm not sure.

The issue is bears. Someone mentioned AK-possibly for bears... absolutely! Where Duane is heading, we see bears on a daily basis and most of the time they are within small arms fire range. Some within rock throwing distance. And sometime within spitting distance.

From what I've read about killing bears with a hand gun- #1 you need a big gun and #2 you have to be lucky. There have been bears killed in AK that were found to have multiple old slug wound found in their body, some slugs lodged in their skulls. An adult male bear's skull is up to 2 inches thick. To kill a bear DEAD and thus, not tearing at your neck, you'd have to get lucky and get off a heart shot and even then, he'd have time to do you in while he was bleeding out.

I like bear spray. I'll take it over a gun any day of the week. BUT when a bear is on top of me, it would be nice to at least have something that may get him off and a hand gun would be that something.

It should be an option to those who would want to carry one in any National Park, at least in AK.

I like the idea of having the option to carry in Alaska. I would only use a hand gun if the bear is already attacking me. I do think that if greenhorns carry around bears, a lot of them will get shot without just cause....false charges and knock downs. Pepper spray is definately the 1st defense that should be used...not deadly, and if it is just a false charge, then no real harm done to the bears. Only after one is chewing on your leg or head should the hand gun be pulled. I just dont think this will be the case when the average Joe is up here encountering a bear for the first time.

It would make me REAL nervous to have a client carrying a gun in the bush in AK. If I were making the rules, clients wouldn't carry them in my camp.

I think guns should be allowed in all national parks, as well as hunting. I'm a big 2nd ammendment guy.

But pepper spray is proven to be wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better bear protection than any gun, as well as not lethal to the bear.

And it won't kill you if it goes off accidentally.

I would think you could make that rule Phil. The same as I think you can make the rule of catch and release for your clients. If they don't want to abide by those two rules, then they don't need to hire your services.

While bears are an issue they are not nearly as dangerous as the two legged variety. More like drug runners, meth labs, and pot farmers or illegal aliens or the coyotes they pay to smuggle themselves across the border.

Top 10 Dangerous National Parks

While it maybe effective in most situations. I sincerely hope that you can use that spray down wind and don't round a bend gale force wind in your face surprised momma on the way. Could make it hard to see your way back or even if the bear was hit.

I think that I would be more worried about the two legged animals that you may run into and I would like the option to carry if I felt it was needed. You guys are forgetting about another animal that us west coast bow hunters fear Cougars. I would take 10 black bear encounters over one cougar encounter any day of the week. Not sure of what pepper spray does to cougars, but I would hate to find out it did not work.

I agree with you about the "two legged variety" being more dangerous. I do think guns should be allowed.

Love the sign
