Bman Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Went fishing with my son & granddaughter Mira today. We got into a bunch of these. Some were HUGE! What are they? Do Crappie cross with Blue Gill? Hope someone can clue me in. Quite a day, lost the biggest Bass I've ever lost! quite the fish story The only good line is a tight line
laker67 Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Beats anything that I ever saw. You need to send a picture of it to MDC. Glad to hear you had a good trip, despite the loss of the big bass.
fishinwrench Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 I think they are a Redear/Gill hybrid. We catch those "black bellied freaks of nature" (what we call them) from a certain strip pit up north....they look just like that. They have the blue cheeks like a green sunfish, a dark breast, and a really thin white border on the "ear". That's a nice one !
Bman Posted May 30, 2009 Author Posted May 30, 2009 Guys, Thanks for the replies. Some are bigger than the one in the pic. Mira was catching them on worms, I caught a few on my 9' 5wt. The only good line is a tight line

Well whichever kinda fish they end up being, one thing is for sure: I bet they were a pleasant and welcome suprise for your little one! I can only imagine the looks of excitement as she hooked one after the other.. cricket.c21.com
Bman Posted May 30, 2009 Author Posted May 30, 2009 One a side note, Guess what some of the big 'Gil-whatevers were coughing up! Betcha won't guess!!! The only good line is a tight line
mhall02 Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 I would agree with fishnwrench, looks like a bluegill/longear or redear sunfish hybrid to me. We were staying there one year and caught a whale of a grass carp, must have been close to 3 feet long!! Biggest fish I have ever caught.
Gavin Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Brings back some memories..Havent fished that lake 30 years or so, since I was 10 or 12, but we always caught some great blue gill there. Crickets were our bait of choice FWIW. Sounds like you had a great time.
