The MTFA meets at the Springfield Nature Center the first Thursday of each month at 630 PM. They have numerous instuctors who have taught the Fly Fishing class at MSU for many years. They will welcome you and help, without joining but for $10 it is cheaper than a casting lesson, and a great group of folks. Check out thier website, http://mtfa-springfield.org/

The Ozark Fly Fishers will be casting at the lake in Tilles Park in St. Louis on Thursday evening..There will be plenty of good casters on hand if anyone wants a casting tuneup. Cheers.

I'll check out the MTFA guys. I was thinking about taking the fly fishing class this summer at MSU but I decided to take the summer off, maybe next summer. Thanks for the information guys.

Looks like the MTFA guy's might be the way to go for myself as well, so I might "hook-up" with them on one of the dates. Thanks for all the input & suggestions!

Your best bet is to hook up with a decent caster and get the basics down. After then, it's practice, practice, then practice. 30 minutes a day in the yard will work wonders. Nothing wrong withh lessons to get you started.

I have to echo Don's thoughts. Clases are great and always wortht he money. Getting together with a few guys from this site is another option. Most may not be good enough to get casting certified, but they will probably be able to get you the basics you need. Not to mention the friendship and comradery made during a trip. The first year I was fly fishing was spent with guys from our local club at outtings. They didnt mind at all giving up the possibility of catching fish to show me how to tie knots and cast.

I have to say that practice is huge. If you will spend only 10 minutes a day in the front yard you will be amazed how well you can cast in a week. If you watch the rod tip the entire time you will begin to get the hang of it.

Why don't we (Ozark Anglers forum members) hold a casting class at the dam ?

Anyone keen on the idea ?

Brian has a great idea. I am positive there are casters here willing to teach new fly fishermen and spend time helping others get tuned up.

Brian great to see you back on OAF.

MTFA or Southwest Missouri Fly Fishers both have members (some are members of both clubs) who can help you. I'm sure if you go by Backcountry Outfitters and catch Michael on a slow period, he would give you some pointers.

Out of curiosity, I took the BPS class a couple of years ago and would not recommend it unless you've never held a fly rod in your hands and just want the very basic basics. To start getting serious, get with a good instructor - CCI or not....

We could do an informal "mini conclave" type of thing at the dam pavillion this summer. I know Michael held something last year like that and Jeremy did a casting clinic.
