Kyle Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Going fishing next weekend and leaving friday morning. Going to fish Lake Taneycomo on Sat and Sun with Randall. So, I figured on my way down I would hit one of Missouri's smaller waters. I have never fished Roubidoux, Mill, or the Little Piney. Anyone have a good reason to pick one over another? I have fished the Current and Meremac so I have a little knowledge on fishing outside the parks. So, I guess what I am getting at is: 1. Which of the three would you pick and why? 2. Tips on any of the three. I am comming from St. Louis. I will be using a fly rod. I catch and release. thanks for your suggestions Kyle
fishinwrench Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 1. Which of the three would you pick and why? Definately Lil'Piney. Mill cr.= is nice if total solitude with a slight chance of hooking up with a little wild trout or two makes you content. Roubidoux (assuming you are talking about the trout holding portion) = is ok for killin' some time while stuck in the W'ville area...but you probably won't be hankering to return any time soon. Wherever you decide on, don't forget to take some of your favorite Hopper patterns. Good luck, Wrench
Gavin Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I'd hit the LP and Mill...Mill dumps into the LP just below Newburg, so you could hit both in an afternoon...Mohair leaches (brown and olive) are my most consistent flies down there...There rainbows, so flashy nymphs, glo balls and SJW's work well too. The Roubidoux...Havent been there in a couple years, but I've always caught more bass than trout. Cheers.
Bman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I agree, the Little Piney. The only good line is a tight line
2sheds Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Little Piney downstream from Lane Springs is pretty cool. Highly recommended if you are looking to camp and fish at dusk and dawn. Did well recently in late July catching the smaller wild trout there with copper john & pheasant tail nymphs. Hooked up a few nice larger ones on don's crawdad fly. However, I also had a great morning fishing Roubidoux with Jason. We caught trout, smallmouth, goggle eye, and more in a very pleasant late morning to early afternoon wade through the MODOC area. I will be back !
ozark trout fisher Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Definately Lil'Piney. Wherever you decide on, don't forget to take some of your favorite Hopper patterns. Good luck, Wrench Gotta agree with that assesment. Little Piney.. Good sized stream with an excellent population of wild trout, and few fisherman. The best water is from Lane Spring Recreation area to the Vida Slab access. Mill Creek... Small water, not many fish. That pretty much sums it up. Roubidoux... This time of year, warm water, few trout, and an urban environment. Little Piney is your best bet. Definitely
ozark trout fisher Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Oh, as far as flies go, here's a short list... I primarily spin fish, but I've had good success a few times on the Piney using a fly rod. 1. Woolly bugger #10, olive, white, or black 2. Prince Nymph #16 3.Beadhead Pheasant Tail #18 4.Hare's Ear Nymph #16 5. Elk Hair Caddis #14 These are just the ones that I've had success with in Little Piney. I'm sure there are many others that will do very nicely. The trout are not selective, if you make a drag free drift, and a fish sees it, chances are it will take. But they are pretty easy to spook. You'll want a 7x for sure.
Kyle Posted August 21, 2009 Author Posted August 21, 2009 Thanks for the imput guys, I'll let you know how it goes. Kyle
Kyle Posted August 26, 2009 Author Posted August 26, 2009 Well, I decided on the Little Piney Creek and got to the river about 6:15 am at the Turner Springs access. I fished for about 5 hours and only managed one fish that was about 6 inches long. Poor little thing still had par marks on it. Nice river though and never saw another person all day. I think that I may need some more coaching before I go next time. Kyle
