denjac Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Last night at 22 hours got a call from Cartahge PD that our store had been broken into. When I arrived the crook had gained entry by kicking in a door that went to the basement. He went straight upstairs to the cash register and smashed it getting around $200. He was seen by a witness leaving the scene. When the police had finished I locked up and visited with the officer for a few minutes in the street. I jumped in my car and left. The officer when getting back into his car heard a loud crash and walked 20 yards to the store next to ours. The idiot had broken into there store and the officer caught him red handed wth the cash register in his hands. What a idiot! The officer who by the way was very young got to udder the words 10-26 at gunpoint. Probabbly the first time he ever got to draw his weapon. Way to go Patrolman Nate Moore!! They are still trying to tie him to my theft, but to me its a no brainer. How did I do on my cop talk Techo? Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Terry Beeson Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Did he get to take his bullet out of his shirt pocket? Just kidding... I'm glad they caught the guy, but the question is, will he do any time or will he get a slap on the wrist? Now... before anyone gets upset with the Barney Fife joke at the top... I had a friend who was a cop in a town of about 500 people who recently was killed when he pulled over a stolen vehicle and walked up to confront the driver. Took a bullet before he could even react... I admire and respect all the "Barneys" out there for sure.... God bless you all for your service. Brian K. Shaffer Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Terry - sad to hear that story. I remember when a Gassville Arkansas PD patrolman was chasing a drunk driver several years ago and somehow crashed and was killed. I believe the guy in question got away. Terrible. I betcha this criminal will have to pay restitution for your damages to your shop. Not sure if they can go after his folks for the money or what... but that just chaps my butt to hear of good hard working folk getting robbed into like that. My parents had 2 pretty nice TCBY like ice cream and frozen yogurt shops in Houston, TX. Our stores got broken into so many times it wasnt even funny. At one point - I saw one store 4 down from ours being broken into while I was sitting in my car at 2:30am doing surveillance on our store. The 2 guys dressed in all black head to toe threw a huge rock into the window of a nail salon.. I drove off and called the cops right away. The guys were never caught. We got to where we started hiding any money in ice cream pans in the freezer and covering with a mocked up fake ice cream top. We still got broken into but they never did get any more money. We just inturn got lots of hassle putting the pieces back together. I do hope that your cleanup and rebuild wont cost too much. What a dumb criminal though... he deserved to be caught .. the planets had aligned and his time was over! cheers, Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
denjac Posted September 15, 2009 Author Posted September 15, 2009 Brian, he did no other damage other than to the cash register. The door was an eay fix too. He just lived 2 blocks from our store in an upstairs apt. No money was found on him at time of arrest, he had about two hours in between thefts. Police went to search his apartment but was denied permission to search by girlfriend. Eye witneess is going down to the jail to ID him this afternoon. If he does ID him his goose is cooked on my breakin. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. hoglaw Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Two commercial burglaries would deffinately come with pen time in Washington County. I doubt it's a probation case. Just make sure to document your damages and losses and follow up with your prosecutor with a request for victim restitution. They will make it part of his plea agreement. No, they can't make his folks pay for it, but if it's part of his plea deal there are at least some teeth behind it. What a moron.

Thanks for the info I was wondering how to go about restitution, not that I would get anything but might add to his time if he doesnt. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. If they send him to prison, you won't see a dime until he's out unless he tries to pay you before sentencing to butter up the judge. Chances are the guy doesn't have any money anyway. But they won't let him off probation/parole until the restitution is paid.

Sorry for the bad luck though. With the karma involved, you must due a big fish by now. Back to Table Rock forum for me! Tim Carpenter
