Well, there was a last minute planning on going to BSSP with some friends on Oct. 9-11. But, all campsites are reserved and cannot get a site at all. Even spilt reservations of campsites are out of the question. Are there any close to the park campsites that are fairly good and clean? If so, where at, how much per day, and the name of the campsite?

If every campground in the area is already booked solid I wouldn't wanna be anywhere close to there that weekend. I've never participated in the Holland derby, I didn't know that it drew that big of a crowd. Wow !

Have you checked with Riverfront ? (417-588-3386)

I did not know there was a derby happening that weekend. Hrmmm. Has anyone ever gone to one of these derbies? If so, is it worth fighting the crowd?

All campsites in BSSP are booked solid that weekend. I have never camped anywhere outside of the park before and was wondering if there were any outside.

"You" won't have to worry about fighting the crowd. "They" will want to fight you first. If you have never witnessed one of these derby's, you owe it to yourself to attend. It will remind you of a one day sale at the shopping mall.People will come from miles around at the chance of snagging a big fish. Did I just say snag? Normally they turn out 40 lunkers and 39 will be dead by noon. Most of the derby participants will have the streamside manners of a grizzly bear. You do not have to participate in the derby, daily fishing goes on as usual. Just keep an eye open for some unusual and comical events.

I've fished Bennett Springs for years and never been unlucky enough to hit on a day with one of these derbies. Sounds horrible!! Count me out.

Clarence Holland is this coming weekend I believe.

Have you ever tried campground 5? It's my favorite and I never (knock on wood) had a problem getting a site. It is first come first serve. Plus you have more space between sites. Only drawback is the size of your rig. Then you have to be a little more selective.

If you get down there on Thursday evening you will probably find a site open in 5. Friday morning you still might but sometimes it fills up quick. I was down this past weekend, arriving Wednesday evening. There were only about a dozen campers. It stayed that way until Friday around noon and the trailers started arriving. But 5 never got full.

Plus you don't have to pay that darn $8.00 reservation fee!

Good luck.

We’ll be down there for the Derby. We’ve been to every October derby for about 10-12 years. It get’s crowded but not “Opening Day” crowded. Some years it’s worse than others but it’s fishable. A lot of folks will be there for the siren and if the fishing is good they’ll get their 4 early and call it a day. From mid/late morning till mid afternoon it’s just a little worse than a “normal” weekend. It generally starts to fill up around 3:00 again but it’s not as bad as the morning. I am a bit surprised to hear that every campground is booked already. This could be an exceptionally busy year. If you do go I’d make the donation and fish the derby. I’ve never won anything but someone from my 6 person group usually gets a tag every 2-3 years. The prizes are decent and the donations go to a good cause. We’ve won a good “starter” fly rod combo, decent spinning reel, nice fishing shirts, etc.

It will be busy, no doubt, but don’t let these guys scare you away. You just gotta have the right mind set. ;)

I accidentally made it to Maramec on derby day one time. I won't ever make that mistake again. I honestly believe more fished were snagged than caught. It kinda made me want to throw up... What satisfaction could a person possibly get from snagging a fish?

One guy even walked up to me and bragged about catching them on a "treble hooked wire nymph". I told him it was illegal, but he didn't seem to care.
