eric1978 Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 First thing to remember is that Fly Fishing is not as mysterious and you would think. It's only as difficult as figuring out whether the chicken or the egg came first. I wish I knew fly fishing...it seems really involved when you're clueless.

Dano One of these days, Dano, I'll take you up on that. If I wasn't so obsessed with smallmouth, chasing brown trout with a fly rod would be at the top of my list. Thanks for the offer.

Now you know what obsesses me. Â Â
Danoinark Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 How about chasing smallmouth with a fly rod??? Now you know what obsesses me. I knew Ronnie would bite on that.... It gets no better than smallies on the fly. And Eric some of the same techniques used for catching trout on the fly apply. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
eric1978 Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 How about chasing smallmouth with a fly rod??? Now you know what obsesses me. I've considered it many times, but I always seem to keep working on improving my ever-evolving spinning and baitcasting techniques. I've said it before that I think fly fishing is absolutely the purest form of fishing, and I really admire good fly fishermen. I'll get there eventually, but for now I'm still pretty preoccupied perfecting my current style.
Flysmallie Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 I'll get there eventually, but for now I'm still pretty preoccupied perfecting my current style. Catch a nice smallie on a fly rod and you may not need/want any other style. I will say that it's not for everyone. And some days it's not the most productive style, but you can always find another warm water species to play with. But to me it's worth all the extra work. The chances of you landing a 15" smallmouth on conventional tackle are pretty good. The odds are with you. Hooking that same fish on a 3wt. is insane. Now the tables have turned and the fish has the advantage. Rod doubled over, line screaming off the reel, I love it. Â Â

I would like to start night fishing around November 12 and am game for fishing anytime after that through whenever. Monday nights through Wednesday evening are bad, but any other time I am open if I can learn anything. I honestly will fish whenever after that day. Night, day, whenever I can learn anything. If you are going... I would like to go with you. I just want to fish.

If you are going... I would like to go with you. I just want to fish. Disclaimer... I'm ok if I never hook a fish, just being knee deep in water with a rod in my hand has been enough for the last year. I'm sure it will be enough for many seasons to come. Not much better than doing what you love on a random weekend. I mean you really can't ask for more than that.
Nortrad Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 You'll hook one. One day all the aspects will come together. I'm a believer in weather being a great equalizer of fishing. If the weather is right, and your presentation of fly is fair/good, you'll hook up. Weather also throws a big kink into a good fishing area. Another good thing about this sport is the choice of flies you can use, and their respective methods to fish them. You can a fish a certain fly differently and hook up. You can also change a fly a certain way and be successful. Of course, you have to get the tying bug for that. Then, you are truly obsessed/addicted/hooked/sprung etc.
