Gatorjet Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Nothing wrong in being observant of what is going on around you, or being observed if you aren't trying to hide something. In my opinion, the restricted area above Fall Creek should be catch and release entirely. Go up there to have some fun, take pictures, measure your fish and have a mock up mount made of your trophy if you catch one. They don't cost any more than killing the fish, and with the proper measurements and pictures they are very true to life. If you want "skillet" fish, stay below Fall Creek. Although, I personally like to see a minimum length down there to, maybe 12 or 14 inches. Real men go propless!
Dave Cook Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Ditto Thom. Why do I worry what other fishermen do? Because I would hate to see someone on vacation have to pay $100 or more for a fish or worse be hauled away in front of their kids. I've seen way too many violations at Taneycomo. In every instance where I have approached the person I treat them as if they are ignorant of the rules, tell them what the regulations actually are and where they can do things like bait fish. And I have never had one of them thank me for trying to save their a$$. The cold hard fact is that anyone illegally taking fish is stealing from me and you. Next time you see a 16" brown put on a stringer, think about it. If any of you that have witnessed gross violations (like keeping fish in the slot, caught on bait, in the restricted area) and never approached the person, give it some thought and approach the person. It will change your perspective. Dave Cook Missouri Trout Fishermen's Association - Kansas City

Both times I made it clear that I was not judging, but saving them from a ticket later on. People who break the law typically aren't from around here, and don't know warden patrol is lax. I simple kind word does wonders.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I've actually had many people thank me for telling them, particularly down at the boat ramp. They just walk right past the sign oblivious to the rules. 7-10 people are cool about being educated that they are in violation of the rules. It's the 3 that want to fight that make me just turn around and walk away. Thom Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I don't care to fire on ya. I just felt like responding with my perspective. Ahh, the old Nazi reasoning cliche, ok. You win. What I asked. That is my opinion wrench so give me and them the same respect that you want to have for yours without demeaning comments toward them. Thanks for the respect. YOur name wasnt mentioned saying " if y ou dont have anything to hide...." If it doesnt apply don't take it personally .. just my opinoln that I what I was taught in a very conservative small southern Illinois town growing up. Actually you seem to be a pretty nice guy I just dont happen to agree with you. I make no apologies for that but I will defend your position to state your opinion as long as it does not attact someone personally. In my college debate team I was taught that argueing "ad homium" attacting the person instead of stateing a fact or making a point was a useless and pointless way of putting forth an argument. Opinions are not in that category if supported by fact. Sorry if I seemed to get under your skin I just see soo much abuse of our streams and parks that it is a touchy subject with me .... I am not implying that you are guilty of such conduct and I apologize if it seemed that way. Sometimes us old folks nearing 70 just get a little testy .... don't take it personal. drew03cmc Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I am in the minority here, but if what I read is true, before length limits, before browns and before Powerbait, Taney had massive rainbow trout. Now, with browns, there are nice fish in the lake of both species, but both are hatchery managed, and if someone takes a 13" brown or bow from the lake, in a month or two it will be restocked, so I don't see the loss there. If someone takes a 20 pound brown, it would be tragic to some (not me, stockers are stockers, no matter how big), however, it was not a wild fish, and does not have the value (IMO) of a wild fish. The MDC focuses on deer during deer season because it is a cash cow, possibly more so than the state's artificially sustained trout fisheries. Frankly, fishing on Taney would be nice due to the size of the fish, but it would not have the same allure as chasing a wild rainbow on any of Missouri's wild trout creeks. I would estimate that the state spends more money on trout annually than they do on deer, especially over the last three years. I would suggest opening up the regulations to allow bait in the upper lake, to the dismay of most fly fishermen on here, but that would make some of these things, that are constantly griped about, moot. Several members on here make Taney out to be the best trout fishery in the world and while, for size of fish, it is a decent fishery, it is not in the same class as the fisheries out west that possess trout naturally and are not completely reliant upon hatchery fish. Love Taney for what it is, do not make it out to be something it isn't. Andy
Brian K. Shaffer Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I do not make it out to be much of anything -- given that it could be so much more. As far as opening it back up the regs pre97 -- I say no way, it would'nt make MDC money sense. There are some big plans with real habitat improvement coming down the pipeline. Just be patient .. young grasshoppers. Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.

I communicate on here with you guys in the same way (tone, demeanor, and language) that I speak to my friends. If we meet in person you can be sure that I will come across the same way in person as I do on here. I do not play a different person when I'm online. Brian has probably got a thorn under his saddle cuz I busted on him about the "moon" thing awhile back. But I mean c'mon ! I would have said the same thing to his face if we were BSing in person....Same deal as above. Far as I'm concerned we're all a big happy family here, we're bound to get ticked off at one another from time to time,,,,,and then either work it out or get over it. Right ? Brian K. Shaffer Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 ok wrench... consider it squashed ! by the way, what do you see could be an improvement to the upper protected end of LT ?
