Turkeys do eat some quail, but they are not the culprit. Bunny huggers that devistated the fur market are to blame.

You number 1 and 2 culprits are fescue and clean fence rows. Or you could say the number 1 culprit is cattle. Missouri is #2 behind texas in cattle production. And most of that is in SW Missouri.

That and everybody has to live in the country theses days. There are houses freaking everywhere now. You can tell where the parents have passed on and left the farm to the kids. It has a bunch of houses on it now. How great it must be to visit the old home stead with the children and tell them all the great stories of yester year. All the while looking at a bunch of over sized over priced homes!

BTW, I didn't know turkeys could digest bone. I have never heard of them coughing up a pellet like Owls.

I think people have done far more to hurt pheasant and quail numbers than turkey. I think the stories about turkeys eating quail are myths. I'm not saying it has never happened, but it's probably rare. Quail would be fine if they had the cover to hide in.

I'd like to see someone post something proving turkey eat small quail or their eggs. Whether it be on a regular or infrequent basis. We all know, I hope, that turkeys don't eat adult quail. LOL! Destruction of their habitat from clear-cutting farm practices, from it be leaving no native grasses along fencerows, to farming to the edges of hard timber, to not row-cropping, have led to the decline in our upland game bird populations. Quail and Pheasant. Easy meals for coyotes, coons, raptors, foxes, snakes, rats, etc.

Is CRP helping? It's got to be... right?

Maybe we should start a "Turkey eatin' Quail thread" !

Probably happened already... if so, hope everyone was good! :P

Google Turkeys eating quail. Every story is consistent in that there has never been any study to prove the rumor that turkeys eat baby quail. These are all studies by several different states wildlife departments.

I agree that it is a lot of other critters, and one of the worst in more populated areas, domestic cats let run.

At my age it would impossible for anyone to convince me it is anything else. It was common for fields, both crop and pasture, to have 8-10' of rough.

I believe a turkey would eat baby quail, the problem is they don't generally occupy the same areas at the same time, at least not enough to make a major difference.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
