eric1978 Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Nice collection....how do you like those Caps reels? I like the styling, but hows the drag? Do they overspool easilly, or are they similar to a Hardy? Here's a glimpse at a few of mine from a several years ago...Think the current collection numbers between 15-20 fly rods, a similar number of reels, and a basement full of tackle and tying materials. Cheers. Nice rods Gavin. I love the burl reel seat on the one third from the top. Or is that bird's eye maple? They're all beautiful.
Paola Cat Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Hey Brian .... You need a few more? PC Cheers. PC
Gavin Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Thanks, its a nice piece of birdseye maple...but I wouldnt use a sliding band on maple again...The wood is fine but the sliding band takes the finish off and it gets grey..........kinda like a well used Fender Guitar neck.
laker67 Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Laker, I assume your talking about the one one with the feather inlays....Its a 9wt Sage custom by Tom Hargrove.. That would be the one. Nice!! I have a 9 foot factory xp with the same handle.

That wouldn't bother me, that's just character. You could rub a little Tung oil on it and it would refresh the wood and make the grain pop.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted November 17, 2009 Author Posted November 17, 2009 Thanks for the kind word guys. I told you all - I have a problem. Tim - actually.. I have some more to re-take pics of. Some pics came out terrible. Gavin - Nice rods and reels! Those Caps reels are hard to tweak for correct left or right. Its like trying to adjust the 1903-1911 Hardy reels with the big caliper drag and center pawl. One false move and you gotta re-tweak for an extra ten minutes. I have mine both tuned to RH pretty good.. the larger one has been out on the water and it is quite nice. The placement of the pillars on the frame make no sense. Instead of three, there are only 2. Odd. Mine were both taken in on trade. Don't spend over $65. Laker67 - I would love a Heddon 300. I had one.. and sold it. (should've never done that) As for the System One, I am working on the Daiwa SF706. Same reel with better styling. I have 2 spools already but no frame Someday I will win on eBay. But I keep getting outbid. PC - I could always use a new reel. You got one ? More pics to follow. Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Bman Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Gavin, The rod in the center, was it built by charlie reading? I have one of Charlie's rods he wrapped for me in '83. Charlie was living in a back room at the old Spring View Tackle shop inside the park at the spring hole. The only good line is a tight line
laker67 Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 I have one of Charlie's rods he wrapped for me in '83. Charlie was living in a back room at the old Spring View Tackle shop inside the park at the spring hole. Another nice custom rod. I wonder how many he had built at that point. I would imagine most will not remember the original spring view store. Tony and Shirley Pac and then Ed and Kay. Charlie used to fish bennett alot in those days. Now he just does those exotic trips. Thanks for showing the rod Bman.
ohmz138 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Dad, wasn't that custom ultralight that was stolen down at Meremac Spring Park a Charlie rod too?
Members jasonpope Posted December 7, 2009 Members Posted December 7, 2009 Just thought I'd throw this in here. I ran across this old Pflueger from the 30's that is brand new at an awesome price so I snatched it up. It still has the original paperwork and box with it. I haven't decided whether I am going to put it on a bamboo rod and use it or put it up and buy one just like it that's been used and fish with it. I would like to hope that my baby boys will take up fly fishing one day and one of them would like to have it. Anyone have any idea what it's worth? Notice the $3.50 price on the box from when it was new.
