I shot this at the base of the shot rock bank at the narrows. 3/4 mile above Fall Creek where Fall Creek Resort did the retainer wall work last year. Lots of scuds in the whole area, esp along the banks. Scuds and other bugs move with the water as it drops out. The trout were working the edges like crazy this evening.

Phil,

That was interesting. That gives some perspective on size and motion of the little buggers.

Thanks!

Does it seem that the scuds are getting bigger, and more plentiful than the past several years, or have I just not noticed them as much?

I was down on Saturday night around Rebar with a couple friends and once I wrapped up fishing, I turned my headlamp to the bottom of the stream to check out the wildlife. Sculpins were everywhere, about one or two every square foot. Also saw a crawdad that looked like it belonged in the choose-your-own-dinner tank at Red Lobster.

The bite was good, though I'm still getting a handle on fishing at night. Only saw a few other people out there with the water off – we were surprised there weren't more people out taking advantage of it. It was a beautiful night for it.

Man, those little bugger can scoot!

Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to

watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly

know everything there is to be known.

What is it about Taney that produces so many big scuds ? I never see scuds much bigger than about a size 16 anywhere else I fish, with the occasional one close to a 14....but not quite.

There are scuds up to a size 10 in Taney, and possibly larger.

Phil, what's the biggest scud you've ever seen ? I bet you could set a state record on that, easy. How big can they get anyway ?

Biggest scud- probably an eight. But most are 12 and smaller.

Could you see the tiny bugs flying around? I didn't see them with my naked eye but did in the video. And the tiny scuds too.

Thanks for the compliment on the report. I feel pretty funny talking into the camera... I'm not the best orator. And I don't know where to point the camera either.

Quite the contrary Phil. Your reports are always very interesting and informative. I have just in the past few years started to put to use what I have learned from you at your place, at the seminars up here, and from this site. I think it has all made me a better fisherman. Thanks Phil, and keep it up!

Good video, Phil... With that much action, it's hard to determine where to point the lens... But that was very good.

You could over-dub the audio after watching it and taking notes to enhance the audio, but I think it's fine the way it is...
