Forsythian Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 For a year now I've been looking for just the right kitchen bar / island for my basement. Seeing nothing "ready-made", I've decided to construct my own. This project coincides with another budding interest of mine, which is fly tying. So, why not a dual-purpose bar / tying bench? So, besides the danger of spilling a carbonated beverage on my hackle, what might be the unforeseen downside to this plan? I'm thinking something roughly similar to the link, only bar height instead of desk height... http://www.montanawood.com/flydesk/catlin.htm Whatyathink? :-) Cenosillicaphobiac
Dutch Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 That looks like a winner to me. It way surpasses my old stuff that I use, but mine is in the shop instead of the house.
trout fanatic Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 I eliminated that problem (single malt is not carbonated).
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 When I think of bars I think of something you lean into, I wouldn't want to tie on something like that. I like my back straight and the top touching my gut. If its too high you'll have trouble looking down on the vise to see that the materials are balanced. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
timsfly Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 That looks like a great bench, I don't like the fact the part you'll be tying on will have to be loose to move back in place when not tying, I hate anything that moves when I'm tying, I tye on one of these, I own two of them and they are great, one I've been tying on at the shop for over 15 years, and for 5 or 6 years before that I tied in the lodge upstairs(R.R. Lodge) when I was living there, great items, and they are rock steady, make one like this and it should last a couple of lifetimes http://www.flytyingfurniture.com/Catalog.html#TVtyr Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
eric1978 Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I agree with Wayne...I'd rather be looking down at a fly than at eye level. But whatever works for you. I would make sure I had a stool or chair with a back on it, though.
Gavin Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Depends....those desks look nice, but it doesnt have enough storage...As for a fly tying desk...Find a good chair....find a desk any desk...buy an extension arm and a waste bucke for your vise...adjust the height of the fly so that you can tie with your shoulders relaxed..not reaching up or down...good lighting is a must too. The TV tyers that Tim mentioned are great...made by George Roberts....great guy...master woodworker and fly fly fisher. Tell him what you want, and he will make it for you. Cheers.
Forsythian Posted December 7, 2009 Author Posted December 7, 2009 Alright guys, bare with me here... imagine the picture below made out of wood, and instead of the sink area you have some semblance of a sitting fly tying area. Appreciate the comments... keep 'em coming! Cenosillicaphobiac
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 That could work, especialy with a light under the bar top. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Appreciate the comments... keep 'em coming! Yeah that would totally work. I'd build in some storage compartments in the back of it for all your stuff. It would be cool to be that close to your beer when you're tying.
