Wayne SW/MO Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 The only way to do it realistically is to put a plan in place and them let biologist use their training to do what they are paid to do, tweak it. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Gavin Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Not trying to dig on you Wayne....I dont think that the higher ups at MDC trust the biologists enough to let them make adjustments.
eric1978 Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Not trying to dig on you Wayne....I dont think that the higher ups at MDC trust the biologists enough to let them make adjustments. I don't know whether or not they trust the biologists...I think the main problem is that MDC doesn't like to make tough choices that will draw heat from one group or another. They are afraid of the political ramifications of changing the regs if you ask me...has nothing to do with what the biologists say. We all know that most streams could use some additional support, and so do the biologists, but those opinions are gagged by the beauracracy side of the department. That's why I'd like to see a study done by a group that is uninfluenced by anything except science.
msamatt Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I would be curious to know if these crimes are being commited on MDC properties? I get the impression from your post that they are doing patrols around the county looking for these types of violations instead of enforcing the Wildlife Code. I agree that most of their time should be spent on enforcing the Wildlife Code but, should they turn a blind eye to other violations? I can just imagine the beaing they would take if they did. Everyone would then be complaining that they are not doing enough to keep the riff raff out of the MDC CA'S. Chief: I don't think that MDC agents are going out of their way looking for non-wildlife related violations but there are lots of counties in our state where all sort of illicit activities take place in remote-yet-public areas and MDC officers are obliged to enforce all laws. I'm not complaining about what MDC agents do or don't do, I just wish there were more of them out there. Members Kathy E. Posted December 16, 2009 Members Posted December 16, 2009 Hi! I'm new here and have been following -- with great interest -- the impassioned and well-informed replies regarding MDC's Smallmouth White Paper. I would like to cover this in this weekend's St. Louis Post-Dispatch, in the Outdoors column, which I write. The resulting article might appear in the newspaper, the online edition (STLToday.com) or both. What I would like from the users of this forum is their permission to quote portions of the various posts in my article. There is enough information here -- and in the White Paper -- for two articles, at least, plus I would also have to give Kevin Meneau a chance for rebuttal (or whomever the MDC powers-that-be designate to do so). Any forum members who have posted on this topic, and who would not mind my using one or two of their quotes (in Al's case, probably way more than one or two quotes), please email me with your forum user name, your real name, your home town and whether or not you would provide me with permission to transfer some of this discussion to the Outdoors column. Chief Grey Bear Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 You may new but, I have a hard time believing you been here all along. I have a feeling someone here put a bug in your ear to gain some more exposure. I have a couple of ideas. Not saying it is a bad idea, I just question what the agenda, or slant of the article will be. My e-address is osagebeach38@aol.com Kathy Etling Outdoors St. Louis Post-Dispatch This may or may not be out of line here, but since Al is the expert on this matter, why don't you contact him directly to set up interviews regarding his views on the state of smallmouth bass fishing in the Ozarks (Meramec and Gasconade basins specifically) rather than taking quotes from a web forum and possibly using them out of context. MDC will not radically change anything pertaining to smallmouth bass in the near future without empirical evidence that action on their part will impact the fish populations of larger fish in a positive manner. Al made a comment about the top end size of smallmouth bass in Missouri as opposed to Virginia, Maine, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Missouri, historically, does not produce large numbers of smallmouth of those sizes. You can catch the rare 20" fish from a Missouri stream, but do not expect trophy sized smallmouth from our Ozark streams. In the western Ozarks, you might only broach 20" once or twice in a great, long while, but that is due in large part to the genetics of the fish. Andy

I would personally love to see an article in the Post about this issue to raise awareness of the growing concerns that smallmouth anglers have about a beloved resource. This thread is not about slamming MDC. Its only goal is to identify the problems that many people feel the Smallmouth Management Area program has. In many people's opinions, including my own, thus far the approach being implemented is, while better than nothing, quite insufficient.
