fishgypsy Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 Hey guys, I have a wild hare to go up to Thomas Hill Reservoir near Macon this winter and try the warmwater arm for crappie and hybrids. Anyone know anything about the fishery? Is bank access do-able? Any recent reports? I did a google search but couldn't come up with anything less than several months old. snagged in outlet 3 Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 I went up there a couple years ago and walked around the banks. You really need a boat but there is a reasonable amount of bank access. It was in January I believe and I caught 8 largemouth while walking around. I couldn't go up the the warm water chute because the water was too high, but I fished the area where it met the lake. There were alot of boats and I only saw one hybrid brought in. If you go, report your success here. SIO3
fishinwrench Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 TH has always had "cycles" of good Winter Crappie fishing. If last year was good then you have a 50/50 shot at some really good slabs. It has been years since I fished it, but I used to live closer and fished it regularly. Typically there would be a year or two of awesome average size in the warm water arm, then a couple years of nothing but dinks. If you hit it right it is outstanding. There isn't much cover in the arm, unless someone has planted some...so you gotta keep moving and searching out the loose groups of fish. When it is slow it can get down right boring and pointless, casting and cranking to featureless water. a Kalin 2" grub on a 1/16 ball head (chart./wht.) is really hard to beat. Hope that helps, good luck
rangerman Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 Its kind of muddy right now, really not worth going. When conditions are right you can catch alot of hybrids if your using the right techniques. Most will be around the 17 or so inch size but they fight very well. My two better ones from there last year were both around 13 pounds. Love the lake it is just very temperamental when it comes to precipitation. A little bit of rain goes a long way in muddying it up. The day the two big ones were caught it was 2 degrees when I put in. Had to use tire chains on the vehicle to safely launch the boat. Luv to fish in the cold, its a blast.
MoSportsmen Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Pretty old thread. But it is all there is. I am pretty new to Th, been there three times this year so far. Catching Hybrids every time, no keepers yet. Tom Messing about in boats
brother dave Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 TH is a nice place fish, my wife and I fished it last week, we caught some nice large mouth, small cats and one dink crappie. Water was murky and no generation by looking at the stack. Bright and sunny over 50 and a light se wind. Can't wait to go back. I shop at the outdoor grocery store
