Members Tanner Posted December 19, 2009 Members Posted December 19, 2009 Is this a good motor for a square stern canoe ? Reliable? Too heavy?
Chief Grey Bear Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 I would look more at a 2 hp. I think 4hp would be too big. It is not going to take much to push you around. bobber Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 my buddy runs a 7 1/2 hp. on his. but, he puts a trolling motor in the bow and runs jumper cables back to make the canoe set level in the water.......... it's fast, almost to fast for some waters <*)))))))>< * AMERICAN CANOE ASSOCIATION CERTIFIED CANOE, and SWIFT WATER RESCUE INSTRUCTOR.*
fishinwrench Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 Before purchasing I would check to see what parts are still available for it. Alot of Mariner ignition, fuel pump, carb parts (and kits), rewind starter components, and even gearcase seals are NLA (no longer available). So a 9.00 seal, a 4.00 needle valve, or a 16.00 rewind spring can render the motor completely worthless. A stunt that Mercury Marine is famous for.
grizwilson Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 On a square stern it would work fine, smaller and lighter than a 4 stroke 2 hp. It would be a bit heavy for a side mount though. Think if you take the time to check the 82 was made by Yamaha, I know my 83 5 hp was. Excellent motor, runs starts great. g “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein

Excellent motor, runs starts great. g Powerheads were manufactured by Yamaha, but ignition and fuel systems are Merc/Tillotson all the way. I'm not aware of any Mariner models with Mikuni carbs, or Hitachi ignition systems, like a true Yamaha has. Merc and Yamaha fell out terribly in a legal battle quite awhile back, and that is where the all to frequent part locating difficulty is blamed. Merc is well known to play that game themselves without a scapegoat excuse, but they really serve it to ya raw where Mariner and Force engines are concerned. Hey, you asked I'm tellin'....FWIW
