trout fanatic Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I just tied some pencil poppers (yeah I know the ice has to melt before I can use them) and was very happy with the way my prototype turned out. I used the Devcon 7 minute epoxy for the sealant and it worked really well but can get a little messy. What do you folks use? Would a clear varnish work?
fishgypsy Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I've just started using Sally Hansen's clear nail polish and like the results. So far it's worked fine for me. Flysmallie Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I use epoxy on just about all of my poppers. It can be real messy until you get used to it. I use small popsicle sticks and tooth picks to "apply" it and then put it on a turning wheel so that it flows out evenly.
Gavin Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Epoxy is messy...and the fast cure stuff tends to yellow...I'd go with a slow cure epoxy...over an hour cure time and rotate them...or a dipped finish with a clear lacquer depending on what you used for the base coats. Cheers.

Cheers. Yeah, I've already had 1 catastrophe with a loctite product that says right on the label that it dries white. For reasons unknown to me, I interpreted that as dries clear. It still colored up real nice tho.

What material did you use for the pencil poppers? That would help determine the sealant. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Guess I should have mentioned that huh? I made them from wood. Very cool looking I must say. I think I am going to give spar varnish a shot and see how that works. I will post results in this thread when I am finished.
ness Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I used Sally Hansen's on my last batch of hard foam poppers. It was sure easy to use and just the right consistency -- thin enough that it spreads out nicely, but not so thin that it wants to sag. It's easy to find too, but I feel like I need to do some explaining when I buy the stuff. Time will tell how durable it is. John
