I just tied some pencil poppers (yeah I know the ice has to melt before I can use them) and was very happy with the way my prototype turned out. I used the Devcon 7 minute epoxy for the sealant and it worked really well but can get a little messy. What do you folks use? Would a clear varnish work?

I use epoxy on just about all of my poppers. It can be real messy until you get used to it. I use small popsicle sticks and tooth picks to "apply" it and then put it on a turning wheel so that it flows out evenly.

Epoxy is messy...and the fast cure stuff tends to yellow...I'd go with a slow cure epoxy...over an hour cure time and rotate them...or a dipped finish with a clear lacquer depending on what you used for the base coats. Cheers.

Yeah, I've already had 1 catastrophe with a loctite product that says right on the label that it dries white. For reasons unknown to me, I interpreted that as dries clear. It still colored up real nice tho.

What material did you use for the pencil poppers? That would help determine the sealant.

Holy crap! Guess I should have mentioned that huh? I made them from wood. Very cool looking I must say. I think I am going to give spar varnish a shot and see how that works. I will post results in this thread when I am finished.

I used Sally Hansen's on my last batch of hard foam poppers. It was sure easy to use and just the right consistency -- thin enough that it spreads out nicely, but not so thin that it wants to sag. It's easy to find too, but I feel like I need to do some explaining when I buy the stuff. Time will tell how durable it is.
