motoman Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Great thread here. I got to fish the James for whites last year (first time) and it was great! - We fish LOZ frequently for whites, but that James was something completely different; I loved it!
slider Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I order my purple beetles out of Alabama, You have to take a days run which is around 15,000 to 20,000 thousand. Me and the guys I fish with split them up and I have sold a few but don't have any extra right now. If you can use that many let me know and I can hook you up with the people in Alabama. Slider DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
CaptainJoe Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 I purchase mine from Phil Lilley. I buy them by the 100's because, as stated previously, so the colors do not fade. Phil carries the best minnows in all colors and they catch fish. Captain Joe Hreha Owner of MO Fenchbulldogs.com; Captain Joe's Guide Service (Retired); OAF Contributor; & Captain, U. S. Bill Babler Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Great Post Captain Joe. I try and support people who support this forum. No one spends more of their time and money here than Phil. It is also very hard to find any bait or tackle shop that sells the quality of merchandise that Lilleys' sell for less. I just have not found it. I was asked a personal question on this thread and probably should have responded by personel message back to the sender. Had no idea everyone and their brother would recommend someone that might have swimming minnows for sale. Phil has thousands in stock of the origionals and would have what anyone needed and never say a word, unless pressed. My Gosh Guys! Lilleys' and Lilleys' tackle store is what supports this site. If you need something they sell, please give them the first shot, you will not be disapointed. I also know for a fact on Swimming Minnows, you flat will not find a better selection or price. PERIOD!!! I keep mine in clear tupper ware and have absolutely no discoloration. I have some large pruple minnows that we took to Kodiak Island 4 yrs. ago and they look as good as the day I bought them. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com

Predator1 Posted January 22, 2010 Author Posted January 22, 2010 I have been wondering lately. Last year my Step-Dad and Fishing Partner met two gentlemen one night leaving the James with some pretty big sows. They showed me the purple beetles. We still caught several dinks and larger males on white maribous, but big sows on white rooster tails. I cant wait to try the purple beetles and swimming minnows this year. Thanks again to all of you. Charles
rangerman Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Sam, I never thought alot about it but I agree with you. I use pink and white early on, switch to pink and chartreuse and then during the tail end I use the swimmin minnows with the purple and gray body.
Tightline Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Predator,I heard they were catching whites above Cape Fair so my son and I decided to give it a try today 1/22. It was pretty tough fishing, but we did manage to catch 8 whites, 6 crappie and 3 bass in 4 hours. The little dink males that were up James last year have grown to about 10-13 inchs, which to me is the perfect size to eat. Sliders and swimming minnows were what we used. We did see one boat trolling minnows real slow into the wind that was doing pretty good on crappie. It was cold with that southeast wind blowing, but it atleast cured my cabin fever.
Sam Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 tightline, thanks for posting that. It's the first good report on white bass/crappie I've seen for a long time. Those are some pretty nice white crappie, for that area. I know several spots upstream from Cape Fair, so I think I know where to look. Now if I can just get a day when the weather's not too bad and I can stand to be out there - Wednesday looks like a possibility.
