I am glad someone started this topic. I am considering switching over to braid with a short fluoro leader this year. I have fished braid to fluoro a number of times in saltwater and it was amazing how much I could feel. I also like the idea of only having to replace a short leader instead of re spooling a 1/4 of a reel or so with mono or fluoro. Probably going to try a couple of reels to see how it works before commiting all my gear. Hope to have some on the water results in a couple weeks. Too bad work gets in the way of fishing.

I switched to Power Pro last year and I love it, especially for spinnerbaits, cranks, jerks and Sammies. Fishing hair jigs in rocky streams was a little problematic, since they tend to hang up a lot and breaking them off is kind of a pain with braid. Also, I did find that occassionally I'd have the water tension problem tossing 4" flukes with spinning gear, but as others have said, if you put your rod tip below the surface, that usually fixes it. I lost ZERO fish to break-offs last year.

Braid tends to float a little bit but you can pull it under...I've been using the thinnest braid that Suffix makes...they say its 6lb, but it seems to be alot stronger than that. I like it better than the 4/15 Powerpro it replaced. Cheer.

Not to conjure up an old thread, but he's some info from Mike Wurm who took 2nd place today on the FLW tour at The Rock. Something for the skeptics to consider. B)

Wurm is running 45 minutes one way to get to his honeyhole. This area is large and within it he has four different points and banks he focuses on. Once heÂ’s there he pulls out an EakinsÂ’ jig with a Zoom Critter Craw trailer and fishes in approximately 25 to 30 feet.

“I love to throw a finesse jig on a spinning rod and now I’ve figured out how to make it even better. I’m using 10-pound braid with a 10-pound fluorocarbon leader and that is the difference. I’m setting the hook quickly and it’s going directly into the top of their mouth.”

Yeah, it's not a huge secret that people who aren't afraid to try some new stuff are switching - even old dogs can learn new tricks. For example, Guido Hibdon.

Lake Champlain. Skipping docks. Win.

Hibdon Takes Champlain...

The part that's relevent to this thread?

"His skipping jig was a 3/16-ounce jig teamed with a brown Guido Bug trailer. The jig was tied to 15-pound-test Trilene braided line on a spinning reel.

"I use bright yellow braid so I can see my line better up under those dark docks," he revealed. "I color the first few feet of the braid just up from the jig with a dark green marker, but the rest of it is bright yellow so I can see when one of those big suckers starts swimming off with it."

And just to clarify, I'm not calling Mr. Hibdon "an old dog"! Maybe "Legend" would be better.

Fireline does last forever (2 seasons for me)and that float you get when it doesn't break the surface tension allows you to use it as sort of a strike indicator if you are fishing shallow current. More of a river application, but another reason I keep 6# fireline on all of my spinning rods. I haven't bought line of any type in almost two years, because one roll of fluorocarbon lasts forever when you're just using it as tippet. I'm pretty sure I'm saving tons of money on line overall.

Please don't beleive the "comparable diameter to XXlb. monofilament rating" on braid. Check the diameter itself of the braid on the package....For example, Spiderwire Ultra-Cast's 30/8 is .012, whereas Stren Sonic Braid 30/8 is .009. Thats 33% more diamter in the Spiderwire than the Stren...In other words Spiderwire's 30 lb. braid is the same diameter as Stren 50 lb. braid. Basically, you have to ask yourself whose 8lb. diameter they are comparing it to...and try to match your braid with the fluoro/mono you throw or go even smaller. I like Stren Sonic Braid 14/3 for my drop shot mainline (it is .007) which is .001 smaller than Seaguar 6lb. and the same dia. as Trilene 100% fluoro 4lb....this might be a good place to start. What brand of braid were you throwing? And remeber braid floats...

I threw Spiderwire and Fireline. Both of it seems to affect the bait if I am trying to get it to get it to a fairly acccurate depth by counting down the drop. I will try a some of the suggestion above and if that does not work I will ty on a full cast length flouracarbon leader.

Thanks for the info.

I think that is where lots of people go wrong when using superline on spinning reels- they use way to heavy (and thick diameter) line than they need. I use lot's of 3/8 and 4/10 Fireline for deep water fishing, and would use the 8/20 Fireline or 8/30 Spiderwire more for heavy cover fishing, like flipping jigs around docks or timber. Use some thin stuff and you'll get down quicker than you would with mono or straight Fluoro.

O.K., last time I'll throw anything further in here. But, the more I read about the FLW event this weekend, the more this kept smacking me in the face.

-

Remember, Brent Ehrler won the 4 day event by 13+ pounds. Granted, he had a great spot............but............

-

"........Tied to the baits was 12-pound braided line and a 7-foot, 8-pound fluorocarbon leader............" (from flwoutdoors.com)

I think the reason I bring this up, is I have a personal irritation for a few skeptics (actually lurkers on the boards here). I've had countless anglers down at The Rock tell me it's completely unnecessary. Which, I understand, and it's just a personal preference for me. But, what sticks with me, is one guy, actually had the nerve to tell me it was "F'ing stupid" to use Fireline with a fluoro leader. <_<

-

So as you can see, this is an issue that 'sticks-in-my-craw'. Although I don't know where my craw is, it's rather irritating. Maybe I should run to Walgreens and get some ointment for that or something?!?!?!..................WHAOH!...............that was a bit much! :P

Rant over, I feel better.

Goodbye braided line thread; nice knowing yah. :nitex::bye:
