Love my new ranger. One thing Id like to do is clean up the clear coat. It has a foggy or milky look to it in some areas. Does anyone know what would clear that up so that I can wax it?

Thanks

This isn't easy buy I have an 88 ranger with a bad gel coat, that was cloudy. You can buy like 1500-2000 grit sand paper and wet sand the coat. Just make sure you keep the boat wet and the paper wet and just go back and forth going in one direction. Dont go in circles. That should clean it right up, at least it did mine. Made the white on my boat white again and added some good shine to the top cap. I also recomend buy a sanding block. You have to use your hands and no power tools. It can get too hot and screw your ^&*# up.

I have used 3M Fiberbglass Restorer and a cheap variable speed buffer from Harbor Freight. Start slow and work up to a high speed. Let the machine do the work! Dont apply too much pressure or too much speed too early... clear coat will burn.

It is less work than the wet sanding, but you have to be careful not to burn the clear coat or buff your way through it.

Make sure you cover your carpet and wear old clothes, the buffer will throw the compound everywhere!

Don't be afraid to wet sand like was suggested. With those grits of paper it would take you a long time to sand through any gel coat. You will still want to use a mild compound and a buffer afterward. That will bring back the gloss. Keep the buffer speed down around 1250 rpms. Let the compound do the work. A good coat of wax will protect it.

I can tell you that whatever you do is only going to be temporary. The cloudy look will come back real quick.

An old boat salesman trick is to wipe it down with SAE30W non-detergent motor oil(or gun oil). That will make it shine as long as anything else, including the high-dollar 2-step marine wax.

Caution if you use motor oil or baby oil it will fill the pours in the glass and then if you ever need glass work it will cause the buffer to grab and they will charge you more to have the work done.NOT a good idea.

Tranny fluid works to.

wow, sand or not to sand...now im really not for sure what to do..

It's easy. Skip it all and just fish out of it. Enjoy having a ride that you don't have to be all anal about rubbing trees and docks with.

While many others are still back at the ramp caressing their boats with a soggy chamois...you'll be halfway home, where you can sharpen hooks, study maps, charge your batteries, rest, and collect your thoughts for tomorrow. :)

Jason, I am in the final stages of sanding, buffing, polishing my 85 Charger. It makes a BIG difference. PM me if you want to stop by and take a look. Also, I would be happy to loan you my buffer and pads.
