ozark trout fisher Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 Well okay.... I didn't mean to start all this. I just got back from Kansas last night, and when I checked OAF, this isn't just exactly what I expected.I meant every word I typed, and in any case I don't have anything more to say. P.S The fish in my avatar had already been killed and was on his way to the dinner plate. As I said in my original post, I think it is perfectly okay to keep fish in many situations. This one was a stocker from a pond in Busch Wildlife.

So to all those that are saying let's just drop it,, sorry but, this is a public forum. If I feel I have something to say, I will say it, just like OTF felt when he started this thread. And by the way OTF, if this is how you truly feel, stick by your guns and say it. That in itself deserves respect. BUT, Don't be put off when others disagree with your point of view. I believe the American Indians had it right when they said "All life deserves a certain respect". Anyone who doesn't agree with that shows little self-respect. But, when it comes right down to it, IT"S JUST A FISH ! If I catch a fish and I am planing on releasing it, it is for the benefit of the next fisherman who may catch that fish as to how I treat it. Not because I'm afraid of how the fish "Feels". I think the main problem with your original post is that it came across as judgmental to all those that fish and don't treat them the same way you do,, IE - Hooping and hollering and throwing them on a stringer. Hey, the young gentleman from Italy who caught his first LM bass was hooping and hollering and I thought that was GREAT!! He was celebrating and it made my day as well. It is easy to see why he was celebrating and to set off to the side and judge someone for that is nothing more than judgmental arrogance. But hey to each they're own. I personally have more respect for the fish I catch than some idiots in this world who pollute our rivers and lakes with sewage and trash. It seems as though everyone agrees you. Our quarry deserve a certain amount of respect, like all living things. We just don't like the judgmental way it was presented. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 4, 2010 Root Admin Posted April 4, 2010 I think I read through all the comments. Bottom line- anglers come from all roads of life with different personalities and beliefs. While some get all excited about catching, some (like me) are pretty unemotional. Some of are more careful than others about handling fish but for the most part, at least for anglers here on the forum, we're splitting hairs with the different views and habits. And that's ok too.

(Hhmm, sounds like a point I've tried to make before) I have no problem with you saying whatever you like to say. I didn't say anything to the contrary. I didn't think I was being judgemental. I guess I just don't buy into the whole "It's just a fish" thing, and I don't personally believe it shows the proper respect to scream and yell when you catch one, just like I don't scream with joy when I shoot a deer. Sure, I love cathing fish or shooting deer, and you could even make the case that is what I live to do. But when another living thing is being harmed, I believe a modicum of resraint is in order. That's my opinion, and that's all it is. I know other people feel differently.
Mitch f Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 When I get upset is when I watch Bill Dance pick up an 8 lb bass by the lower lip and hold it horizontally without supporting the tail. I'm happy he releases it but can't be good for the fish. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Members Stragler Posted April 7, 2010 Members Posted April 7, 2010 Just me but I get really turned off when I see these fishing shows and they are being all loud and stupid when they hook up. I wonder if people act that way or is it just for the camera. In fact I usually mute or turn it off.
