flytyer57 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I managed to get out to the lower access today. Caught a spot, a couple of smallies and a mess of sunfish and a lot of nice weather to enjoy the day. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

By "Lower access" are you talking about the access off Hwy 101? Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
eric1978 Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 What kind of hybrid is that third one? It's kinda got the body of a rock bass and the colors of a sunfish...can they breed?
Guest Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 What kind of hybrid is that third one? It's kinda got the body of a rock bass and the colors of a sunfish...can they breed? Looks like a pure green sunfish to me, although almost all sunfish can interbreed.
flytyer57 Posted April 16, 2010 Author Posted April 16, 2010 By "Lower access" are you talking about the access off Hwy 101? That's the one. Down Marion County Road 7036/7033 I believe. Mostly gravel roads a mile or so after you get off 101. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

I'm no fish biologist, but I think it's a green sunfish. Here's a pic I took last year of a green sunfish caught at Yellville. Not much difference except for the bright colors in the fins. gotmuddy Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 I put in from rim shoals and went to crooked creek thursday. I caught a bunch of trout just before dawn at the mouth on crankbaits and at about 9am started catching fish. I caught a 14" smallie, 12" smallie, 14" largemouth, a few perch, and a crappie! had a great time. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

Why do green sunfish have huge mouths, and longears, redears, pumpkinseeds, etc. have small mouths? Greenies seem more like rock bass to me.
Ham Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 I'd bet when you had enough water to put a boat in at that ramp on the lower access that level of water flowing by would make the boat launching VERY interesting. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

That drive down to the launch is pretty steep. There's a bunch of big rocks at the bottom of the launch that would prevent launching in low water, and in high water, the water will be coming so fast that it will sweep your boat, trailer and tow vehicle downstream in a hurry. Speaking of which, has anybody ever noticed the cars up on the bank, upstream and across from the launch? I was just wondering how they came to be there.
