jdmidwest Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 It is a genetic mutation caused by a lack of a certain pigment in the skin, I think melanistic is the term. It was explained to me by a biologist as we floated the Norfork stocking Brown Trout one time. Several of the stockers were almost white. If they are totally white it is albanism or albino. It is not the Golden Trout breed from out west. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
John Berry Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 These are a strain of hybrid trout stocked by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission last year when they needed some extra trout because of a short fall in production at the state hatchery due to the flood on the the Spring River. They were obtained from a commercial hatchery in Missouri. John Berry OAF CONTRIBUTOR Fly Fishing For Trout (870)435-2169 http://www.berrybrothersguides.com berrybrothers@infodash.com
Members jdixon Posted May 24, 2010 Members Posted May 24, 2010 So is the stocking of these trout just a one time thing?
ness Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 The white trout was considered sacred by many Native American tribes. If a white trout was caught on the first moon after the Fall equinox, it was said to bring good fortune to the tribe, and many beautiful wives bearing wise and strong braves, to the dude that caught it. Congratulations. John

Congratulations. Unfortunately, the natives probably gigged them...... "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
