Paola Cat Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I'm evaluating one of Troy's Spider Wire leaders right now on my 7 weight warm water rig. So far, so good. Cheers. PC

fishinwrench Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 That Stealth Spider leader of Troy's is Top Notch. It rolls over very nicely and I'm thinking it has the gumption to outlast the average flyline.

Members ksbass Posted June 9, 2010 Members Posted June 9, 2010 My son and i floated the niangua today and my ears were ringing. Now i know why. I'm on a 'smartphone' in the camper so will keep it short. Rcguy- take a look i a previous post on furled leaders. I put alot of info on what i think works fl wise. Fished Bennett couple hrs Sun evening, Monday and one hr rhis evening. Fish are smaller and fewer between. Did well up below dam on white marabou midge. Seven in one hr on it this evening. Using thread leader in Bennett tinge. Will fish in the am till noon then headed to norfork so Seth can fish drc for his birthday wish. DoveTail Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I have used Feather Craft's leaders and as mentioned they are made in all styles. The steel ring on the end is excellent. I get a 3' leader, then put 3' of 3x tippet on that and buy a 20# ring to tie the 7x tippet on. Feather Craft comes with a 30# ring. Quick and easy to tie on new tippet. I have had #26 dries stay up with fluro leaders (although the leaders do sink). You will never have to buy another leader with these.
FlyFishinFool Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 You will never have to buy another leader with these. I will agree the furled leaders are great, but your final comment is a lttle over optimistic. As FC states, their furled leades are "uber" strong, but they will eventually wear out. Do they outlast knotless tapered leaders when both leaders use a tippet ring? Absolutely - the furled leaders will outlast the regular tapered leaders at least 10-to-1 or more; but "never have to buy another leader"? That has not been my experience......while using FC furled leaders I have had them last an entire year, but you will eventually have to replace them. * ´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> `•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((º> .¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."
Members Knot Head Posted June 9, 2010 Members Posted June 9, 2010 I started using furled leaders around 5-6 years ago. They are fantastic for fishing dry flys on the Smokeys small streams where I've used them the most. I've only used Blue Sky leaders and they have no stainless ring so it's recommended that you tie a short "extender" section of 2X or 3X and then tie tippet to that. IMO opinion, they're pretty much worthless for anything but dries and warm water patterns (my favorite application for a furled leader BTW), so I'll be checking out Feathercraft's mono version. Also one other disadvantage to furled leaders is that they can be bad about throwing off water spray onto the water's surface on the cast. Not too much of a big deal unless your fishing very spooky fish.
Members ksbass Posted June 9, 2010 Members Posted June 9, 2010 To clarify we make furled leaders with thread, mono, flouro, and spiderwire. Each has its own benefit and use. We make them in lengths of 3, 4, 5, 5 1/2, 6, and 7 ft in weights from 2-8 wts. We use the tiny 2mm and 3mm ss tippet rings as well as tiny brass swivels for our leaders. All of our leaders are pretreated to either sink or float based on purpose and material type. We can make the thread based leaders in just about any color combo you would want. We've found the hot pink and fl orange colors to be popular for indicator leaders. All of our leaders are made by myself and my 10 yr old daughter. Emma is earning money from the leader sales for her college fund, spending money and to donate to her favorite wildlife cause. She has already donated several hundred dollars to the WWF and adopted several animals. Right now she is planning to donate $100 to the Dry Run Creek stream restoration project. She has $76 in this account so is almost to her goal. Give us a try. We think you will be pleased and you will be helping a good cause. Thanks, Troy and Em Check out our line of furled leaders at Dad and Em's Fishing Products!
flyfishmaster Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I have been using furled leader for about 3 years now. I think they are fantastic... except for when you have to bring the leader into the eyes on your fly rod in order to land a fish. I have notice that this is causing a lot more wear on the eye at the rod tip. Currently I have a 5' furled leader on a 7½' rod. So are there any suggestion how to save th rod tip besides using a shorter Furled leader? later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
