Members vince Posted June 12, 2006 Members Posted June 12, 2006 Just got a new 5wt St Croix rod and went looking for some big bluegill( to no avail). I was using a pink micro jig, 4 lb tippet, under a float set at 18". The float went under, I set the hook and it was off to the races. I was in the boat and had to chase it with the trolling motor. It took maybe 15 minutes to get him in the net. The fish was 32 inches long I don't know how much it weighed but it sure put up a good fight. What a fish to break in a new rod!!!
MoCarp Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 thats a lot of fish on a 5wt!!! a 32 incher was probably mid teens to twenty if it was fat, thats a great fish on the fly!!! take any pics??? Mo MONKEYS? what monkeys?
Members vince Posted June 13, 2006 Author Members Posted June 13, 2006 no pictures, just unhooked him, measured, admired and eased him back into the water. It was a fat healthy fish.
Members john montana Posted July 1, 2006 Members Posted July 1, 2006 It is tough to beat a carp on a flyrod, especially a big one! try sight fishing for them sometime...it opens up a whole new, thrillng world of fishing...stalking big fish and having to make accurate yet delicate casts in shallow water...tough to beat! congrats on your fish! http://carponthefly.blogspot.com/
Brian K. Shaffer Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 I'd say 32 inches would easily break 15+ pounds. Carp are not a skinny fish.. so I would say maybe 20+. Nice fish on fly (well jig), but still on fly rod. I would say a rather nice break-in to the new rod. Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
MoCarp Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 one of the strange habits of euro carpers is most weigh their fish on certified quality scales such as a Ruben Heaton brand usally cost around $135 plus bells and whistles the 1st fish was caught durring the Missouri CAGI and weighed spot on 14 pounds and was right at 34 " long The fish below was taken in Town Lake in Austin Texas this past April was 43 plus pounds --this fish set a Texas State Record and won $250,000 for the Denton Texas lad This is the World Record Taken In Europe and was 82 Plus Pounds! MONKEYS? what monkeys?
snagged in outlet 3 Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 Man that world record fish is freakish looking. Snagged.
