Billfo Posted July 19, 2010 Author Posted July 19, 2010 Unfortunately me trimming brush & trees is like my mom giving me a haircut when I was little.. I still have burn marks from the electric dog clippers ! LOL You know, those chain saws are tricky. Sometimes they kick back at you and you have to swing around to save yourself. Of course that tree behind might suffer a bit. And once a saw starts to kick, it will often do it three or five times in succession. Email me Red-Right-Returning is for quitters !
bobby b. Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 take line varies - if you are looking in Stone Co, you can see and measure the take line from the map which shows property lines and other info link http://www.stonecomogis.com/stone/
gitnby Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 What is a "vegetation permit" ? You are on Big Indian ? How far is your take-line & is that pretty uniform for all the "lake front" homes? I'd call the Corp of Engineers for clarification if we land a home there- but I'd rather fly inder the Corps radar (if ya know what I mean)..."Notice how I didnt ask about snakes " Thanks for your time.. Bill (/quote] You can apply for a vegetative permit, which like I said, allows you to cut down smaller trees, bushes, weeds, etc. There are satellite pictures of the entire lake available, and if the corps suspects you have violated the rules, they can refer back to older photos to see if you have cut down illegal trees. Often, "friendly" neighbors will alert the corps to illegal cutting. My experience with the Corps has been good! I follow the rules and they give me a bit of latitude. For instance, when I had a dead tree that that was dropping branches on my deck, they came out and said I could cut it down. While they were there, they recommended that I cut down another one that was looking like it might be a problem later. 2 years ago, a storm blew down 2 Hickory trees. I called them, and they asked me to send a picture, which I did, and they told me to go ahead and cut the stumps down to the ground and do whatever I wanted with the wood. In terms of the "take line", it is somewhat arbitrary, but supposedly was drawn inititally based on elevation rather than actual distance from shore. That way, even at flood pool, homes would be on dry land. That's why you will see some houses very close to shore on steep grades, and others far from shore on gradual slopes. I am right at 200' from normal pool, but in 08', I could almost fish off of my deck! All in all, your best bet is not to #### with the corps!
Billfo Posted July 24, 2010 Author Posted July 24, 2010 I spoke with the Corp & they were not a scarey as some made them out to be. Actually I thought they were very nice. I understand what they are trying to do- actually they are doing what WE want. Keeping the lake looking good for everyone.I mentioned that the home was previously a vacation home & there are lost of weeds to the waterline- the corp suggested a vegetation permit & told me the rules for that... PERFECT !!! They also told me where my "monument" was & or I could measure 105' from my foundation twds the water & that is about where my "take line" is. To me, that is pretty generous since I have a sloping lot & most of the stuff is closer to the house. I should have a very nice view- legally ! Yes, I like the purpose of the rules.. There is another lake closeby (to remain nameless), Ive seen boat docks made from 55 gallon blue plastic barrells strapped to picnic tables, sheet metal sheds at the waterline, and about every tree & bush cut down so you can see every neighbor on the lake & THEY can see you. Certainly not a good thing for people like me.. I want my surroundings kept nice & I want everyone else to do the same (in my perfect world)..
