What A Mess

Meramec has always been a place for the slobs to waller in, its a shame, it could be a nice park. Most that fish there throw cheese and I have heard the Mexicans have invaded it. Probably why they raised the cover charge to enter the park. Was there last winter for a drive thru, did not cost anything at all. Concessionares came up for bids last year, may have a new shop owner. Call them and gripe or do not go there and choke them out of existence.

Meramec is a flat out joke. They fib on the amount of fish stocked and what they do stock is all smallish dinks. They did just have somebody new come to help run the hatchery, and he came from montauk where he learned from the best. It's aggravating to hear that the other parks have to grow meramec's fish for them since they cant seem to grow their own.

I really cant stand the people that fish that park. The trash not only covers the banks but many of the "fisherman" there are trash. I swore i'd never go back after what happened on their derby weekend last weekend of oct a couple years ago. It was literally 99.99% full of snaggers, cullers, people with way too many fish over the limit, and downright rude people. I had to leave the stream to keep from losing my cool....and im usually very laid back. Ive fished every single park and know what to expect sometimes in the parks but Meramec has to be by far absolultely the worst.

Its by far the worst park and I surely wouldnt mind if it disappeared as long as most of the people that fish it dissappeared too.

It really is true. Go to the old iron bridge pretty much any day of the week and you'll see people up there snagging fish. You are also more likely to get chased out of a spot at Maramec than any other park.

I hope it doesn't disappear though, because it serves as an excellent filter for most of those types of "fisherman"

The James Foundation owns the place and I doubt that its for sale...The James Foundation is a not-for-profit organization so the assets would have to be donated to a public purpose at liquidation...Not that they are liquidating....

So they can't sell to a private buyer?

I completely agree with every aspect of this. I live right outside STL and would rather drive the hour+ to go to bennett. I am really interested in wading their river area just to see what goes on down there but I am a little unfamiliar with the area.

I camp out of a tent there and they now started an 8 dollar "processing fee". So if I want to go camp with my dog, it is $24 (2 person minimum and the 8 for the paper work or whatever). They also got rid of the campers club which might be for the better. It was a one time up front fee in which people could call down and reserve in advance without paying anything. Too many people were not showing up after they made a reservation so they cut that program. It also does seem to be the park where many foreigners go and I think they need to realize if they fish one way in their country (especially on the river), that doesn't mean that those ways apply here... especially with the trash.

If you ever end up camping there and see a site with a couple american flags hanging up, stop by and say hello.
