  1. Back in the early seventies I would be invited to the McDonnel Douglas Fishing club, Gravois arm I believe, maybe Bogue Creek. We could see the bottom past 10' in most places. I noticed a couple of times that a small barge would come by and spray the water for squiters. No bugs, no frogs. There is also a high BOD (biological oxygen demand) on that water. It's not as healthy as some want to promote.
  2. I learned that technique as a young teen south of Hardin, Il on Otter Creek. An ole timer taught me how to do that while I spent a couple of weeks at Grandma's stilt cabin in the summer. BB guns and fish, I was in heaven.
  3. Count me in. I'm a master lurker but I do find solace and friendship in this forum.
  4. How about when you make a reservation in a hotel for a car race 6 months in advance and the hotel call 3 months later and says the rate tripled so take it or leave it.
  5. Evinrude or Johnson (sorry for the smartass remark)
  6. I get the jet boat right to use the rivers. However, I'm hearing impaired and a few years ago while facing upstream and fishing the Meramec upriver from the Dry Fork confluence I was hit by a jet boat and suffered 3 broken ribs. Try hiking cardiac after that. All jet boaters are not A- Holes but some of them give the rest of you a bad reputation. The rivers and streams are for everyone, boaters, waders and floaters.
  7. As far as I'm concerned Wrench is right. Mecury is like Trane heating and cooling equipment. They don't give a **** about the customer. "We have your money now, just go away"
  8. Potassium and phosphorus will always be high around here and there is no way to remove it. It's not much of a problem. What is the Cation Exchange Capacity number (cec)? It's and indicator of how easily your soil will change ph. Google it and you'll learn a lot about how to try and change the ph. It's long process and you don't want to add sulfur with plants in the ground because it may bur them. Yes, compost will deny nitrogen to your plants.
  9. Thats just about what we use in the surf. Most of the time I'll use a short wire leader.
  10. What kind of gear and tackle? I can do about any weight spinning rod and up to 8 wt fly.
  11. For me the thrill is doing it and maybe catching. I don't need to prove anything to anyone. The thrill has been had when you reel the fish in. Be gentle and let it go in the water.
  12. I agree with all of the above. Steel only if needed. Circle hooks rule and everything eats shrimp. Do not surf fish with a Zip lock bag of shrimp in your swim suit.

    What's Cooking?

OK, I'm in on this one. I'm a long time lurker and retired Marine AKA Devil Dog. I keep in touch with other Marines and I need details on this recipe.
  14. Does the spring runoff show up as a blue line on a USGS map?
  15. I was told may years ago by an old timer that the best thing parents can do with their their kids is to hunt, fish and camp. Just saying because its so true. keep it up buddy.
  16. Did man made global warming cause an end to the last ice age? 'The last Ice Age, known as the Pleistocene Epoch, began almost 1.8 million years ago and lasted until approximately 11,700 years ago.'
  17. Al, In the terms of the Marine Corps that's the way to adapt and overcome. Job well done. Fish on my friend.
  18. Harris122, My son and have been doing surf fishing in Florida for about 25 years. The time of year may? cut down on some opportunities but you'll have a good time. IMO 7'medium weight is ideal, 20# line is ok, drop the swivel and weight, The hardhead catfish are not very good as they are generally small. Use a 12" stainless leader with a snap swivel on it to attach to the bait/lure. I suggest frozen shrimp, you can even put it on a large rouge or similar. Just don't put a Ziploc of shrimp in your swimsuit while you fish. Use a yellow and white floating bait bucket on 20' of para cord leash. Fish and small blacktip sharks may bump it but they won't bother you. Gold or bronze spoons about 2" long are also killer for specks, ladyfish and jacks. If using spoons or tipped lure drop the sinker and stay off of the bottom. Keep your reel dry. Saltwater kills the type of reels we use here. Take at last two. If it gets wet it will tighten up and it's downhill from there. High or medium surf can really be an issue but get out early and fish the evening. Fish the channels between the sandbars parallel to the beach because that's where they roam. Get out waist deep to at least the second channel and hold on.. You'll be sunburned, have sea legs and a ton of fun. Fish on my friend and don't break off the bigboy!
  19. Why? It's such an ugly lake with poor fishing. The local speed traps may put up funding $.
  20. Wow MOhawghunter417! That's not very friendly. Yesterday I purchased 50 rd boxes of CCI for $3.47 at Wallyworld. the shelf was full.
  21. Phil-Time to jump in and stop the childishness.
