I bought a 3wt. specifically for bluegill but soon learned that it just couldn't cut it under most conditions.

It couldn't cut it? Sure it wasn't just you?? I've been using a 3wt for gills the last 3 or 4 years. Great little rod and I have tangled with fish that are beyond it's limits. But that's part of the fun. A gill on a 5wt doesn't do much for me. But I would still do it!!!

Can't beat some small foam poppers and a case of beer.

Warmwater flyfishing is getting more and more popular, and I think that's cool.

Are there any fly shops that cater just to warm water fly fishing?

I got rid of my 3 wt because it seemed like there were to many days that the weather frowned on it. I have as much fun with my Orvis Adams, which is slow enough that you get good feel and the heavier line punches out a little better.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I doubt it. But there are shops that cater to just salt water, think Andros Island, Christmas Island...

There are also shops that stock a lot of warm water flies and equipment. The Fly Fishers in Milwaukee, WI carries a lot of materials and flies for warm water. They also carry flies for the salt, and salmon and steelhead along with some trout flies etc. I guess you could call them all around fly shops.

A fly shop that just caters to trout would only be hurting their own business. Many people have to drive long distances for trout fishing so why not carry warm water flies etc???

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

Of course it's just ME, smarta$$, isn't it always ? LMAO !

Everyone else in the world can cast into a 15mph headwind and wrangle a 10 inch gill out of a flooded fencerow with a 3wt. WHILE ON GOVERNMENT SURVEILLANCE just fine.

You know how many women I live with. I don't have any money.

Sure wish you could sell me a rod right now though. I can trade flies for the cost of the rod right?

I wanted to build a new 8wt. bass buggin' rod this Summer, but nooooo, I had to piss all my money away on a stupid boat. Now I have a boat on a trailer with bald tires, so I can't afford to get it to the water.

How brilliant is that ? :woohehe:

I had a 3wt for about a month and bluegills were a ton of fun on it. Unfortunately it went the way of all flesh on the West Branch of the Ausable in New York(the same river that I lost a digital camera on two years ago, it's one of those wading rivers where you may as well jump in at the beginning because you are going to fall) ... Tripped over a slippery rock, fell and broke the tip off. I am incredibly hard on fly rods, the poor little 3 weight never stood a chance. <_<

I like the 5 weight anyway though, because you don't have to switch rods when you want to throw something like a #4 Muddler Minnow. That's a good thing because it's now the only fly rod I own.

I got out this evening for a little fly fishing on the local lake. It was really good, probably because of the cooler weather. I was catching a mixture of bluegill and small bass, mostly bluegills though. The coolest thing was that they were all on a dry fly, a #12 Ausable Wullf. I was reminded tonight of how enjoyable dry fly fishing is, even if you're mostly catching bluegill.
